Bitcoin Woes: The Unfortunate Few Who Lost Their Bitcoin Want it Back Desperately!

in #bitcoin6 years ago (edited)

What would you be willing to do to find Bitcoin you had lost somewhere? As most know. 2017 was an explosive year for Bitcoin. It zoomed past the $15,000 mark and even touched $20,000 before coming back crashing down. The poor unfortunate souls who have misplaced their bitcoin are more desperate than ever to get it back!

According to Newsweek, around 2.78 million bitcoins have been lost since the cryptocurrency was created in 2009, according to Newsweek. At today's valuation its about $18 billion USD.

Here are three crazy and wacky things people are doing to to try to get their bitcoins back!

One person is willing to dumpster dive at a landfill!

Here's how this story goes, a guy named James Howell, worked in IT in the UK. He learned how to mine bitcoin on his laptop in 2009. Apparently in 2013 his computer broke but cleverly, he kept the hard drive in case bitcoin became valuable one day. Oh boy is it valuable today!

Here's the 'doh' moment. While he was cleaning his home he accidently chucked the drive into a waste bin at his local landfill site in Newport, South Wales, where it got buried.

At a conservative valuation of BTC $15,000, Howell's 7,500 lost bitcoins are worth more than $117 million (as of Thursday afternoon). Ouch!

Howell is now begging the city the government in his area to allow him to search the landfill, which reportedly has 350,000 tons of waste, but the Newport City Council won't allow it.

According to tech website Wired, the landfill has strict rules about trespassing and doing so is considered a criminal offense.

Even if the drive could be recovered, lets be honest folks, its probably trashed after being exposed to heavy and potentially toxic waste for so long.

Investors are undergoing hypnotherapy!

Many early Bitcoin investors are in a real boggle because they have simply forgotten passcodes that they originally created to gain access to their Bitcoin wallet. If you know anything about Bitcoin, you should know that if you lose your private keys to your wallet, your precious BTC is gone forever.

But there is hope folks! South Carolina hypnotist James Miller has recently begun helping people recall forgotten passwords and find misplaced storage devices.

"I've developed a collection of techniques," he tells the newspaper, "that allow people to access older memories or see things they've put away in a stashed spot."

This seems like quite an odd service but suprisingly it comes highly recommended! Miller's fee is reasonable if he can get the job done which amounts to one bitcoin plus 5 percent of the amount recovered for his services, although he says his rates are flexible.

Now that Bitcoin is so incredibly valuable everybody is trying to figure out what they did with their lost bitcoins. The temptation of finding them is enough to send them digging through landfills or going to see hypnotherapists!

What would you be willing to do to recover your lost Bitcoin? At what lengths would you go to in order to find it? Do you think dumpster diving for lost bitcoin is a logical thing to do?

I've never lost any, but I know I'd love to find some. Makes you want to pick up any USB sticks you may see laying around in the hopes that there are some keys on them to some hidden gems.

Never thought about that but yah... may as well... Don't just walk by a usb stick on the ground!

This is a very great loss. What a lot of money wasted! It's pretty good to be very careful while cleaning ones closet don't you think so @techblogger? So pathetic!

Be careful with your private keys... If they are gone, its almost a certainty you wont be getting them back and have lost your tokens essentially!

Thanks a lot for the advice. I honestly do not take it so serious but I think I'd have to look deeply into it.
