I would trust the code (as long as it is open source) more than any other option.

Bugs can be fixed quickly if it is open source. Politicians are a different story :)

agree but if the bug is exploited and the result has unintended consequences?
The DAO example and QE come to mind- both bail outs

Yes. but it shows that we can fix these things. Corruption with people is much more difficult.
