First Baby Lapwings have already hatched. :-)

Last weekend I visited the wetlands of the Krems River together with Stefan for some photography of the Lapwings that can be found there. Due to aggressive agriculture the population of these birds is declining, you can still find them on several wetlands or on farmland but their numbers are declining. :-(

Now in May the first Baby Lapwing have already hatched from their egg, and they follow their parents step by step. Baby lapwings are very small and are difficult to see because of their camouflage color. The beautiful colorful feathers of their parents grow only when the lapwing is already older. The parents are extra careful not to reveal their babies exact location, so if you are looking for the small baby lapwings you need to search on a different spot than the parents are.

In my opinion the lapwings are some pretty beautiful birds, and because they have a very funny movement when flywing they are probably called "lapwing". So their name is actually coming from their funny way they use their wings to fly. Fortunately I know several places here in Austria where I can find these birds living on the fields during spring and summer. I am always very happy when I see one of them.
