God Cannot Lie ?

Every Christian knows that God cannot lie, but what Does this mean? Is it some diminished capacity on God's part? He is omnipotent, all-powerful, except for lying. Does God have diminished capacity?

Wouldn't that make him into a cartoon character? Like Jim Carey in that movie Liar, Liar. In which a lawyers son gets his birthday wish that his father cannot lie.

Of course not.

There is a story told of a young George Washington. When his father asked him sternly, "Who cut down the cherry tree?" He responded, "I cannot tell a lie father. I cut down the cherry tree." He was not claiming a lack of ability to lie, but rather that it was not in his character to lie.

And so it is with God. He doesn't lie because it is not in his character to lie.

When we submit to Jesus, He changes our character. We are reborn a new creature with a new character. Can we lie? Sure we have that capacity, but as God makes us more into the image of His Son, it should reflect in our character.

[2Co 13:5 ESV] 5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
