Beersaturday with a unique Bulgarian flavor.

Yes, this is the Rosa Damascena - the unique Bulgarian Rose, from which the best rose oil is produced.

I am from a city, which is the center of the oil roses in Bulgaria. All around there are rose fields, rose gardens and rose and essential oil distilleries. The climate and the soils here are perfect for cultivating these beautiful plants.
I myself had an idea to brew a beer with rose flavor, and actually tried once or twice. The result was very good indeed, although this may not be everyday drinking beer.

The main style of this beer is a Wheat beer, and Rhombus craft brewery topped it with Bulgarian oil roses. On the market there are various candies and a lot of cosmetics with rose oil and rose extracts, and last years there are drinking water with a hint of roses, but this is the first ever beer to take advantage of our traditional flower.

The flavor was quite well balanced, not overpowering the wheat yeast esters, but maybe was a bit weaker than that in my experimental batches. Still, that's a kind of a flavor, which must not be too powerful, because the beer can easily start tasting like a cosmetics hand cream or tonic water. And that's not the point, right?

I must admit, this is not the everyday drinking beer, but it's still a nice one to try. I'm happy to see breweries like Rhombus to implement the idea of using some local Bulgarian ingredients in order to make their beers more interesting.

See ya soon!

Interesting beer, rose is a subtle flavour generally so to get it to come through is impressive.
