Brewed by:

Matilda Bay Brewing Company

Alcohol Content:

4.7%

Beer Type:

Kristalweizen - Wheat Beer

History:

The Matilda Bay Brewing Company is Australia's first true craft brewery. Beginning operations in 1984 in Perth, Western Australia, the brewery quickly grew and found great commercial success, eventually being purchased by Carlton and United Breweries in 1990. Under the giant brewer, the company opened other brewery locations across the country to expand their operations.
The original owners of the Matilda Bay Brewing Company went on to open the Little Creatures brewery in 2005.

Drinkers Review:

The 'original Australian craft beer', this brew was produced around the same time that Australia won the America's Cup in 1988. It is also Australia's original Wheat Beer, crafted on the traditional German wheat beer or weizen style of beer.

This brew is light gold, almost light brown when poured in the glass and the head does hang around for a while. When it comes down to it the things that make a beer sessionable are here, but the things that make a beer classic and also a ripping awesome brew are not. This is a bit of a shame as Australia could be a really fantastic producer of Wheat beer (we've certainly got enough wheat here!), but instead I rate this beer as one to try but wouldn't place it in the outstanding beer category for me.

3.5 out of 5 Stars

It is surprising we haven't really embraced the wheat beer in Australia. I think the best in Australia is Hef by Burleigh Brewing - great banana flavours, a new classic.

Thanks. I'll add that to the list to try. Just down the road from me! Cheers.

Oh yeah Matilda Bay! Good stuff @scooter77 but it's 10am in the morning, guess it's never to early to start 'reviewing' am I right ;)

Hahaha. 'Reviewing', I like that term! This was last night (and tonights) delight!

I've had Redback a few times and don't really rate it personally. I think 3.5 is quite generous.

I also love a good wheat beer. There's a brewery over my way called Red Hill Brewery who do a decent wheat beer. If you can find it, it's well worth a try.

I'll be making my own soon too which will be exciting. I found a nice german recipe to try out.

@badol1994. Thanks for the upvote but please don't beg for votes and follows in return. It doesn't work that way. Maybe if you comment on my posts regularly and produce some awesome content too, I might follow and send some votes your way, but until then, don't comment and beg for follows and votes. Thanks for the post. I wouldn't mind trying the Redback beer. The redbacks have finally made it over to NZ, but not the beer yet! So it'll have to wait until my next holiday over to OZ to try it. I think my all time favorite Aussie beer would have to be Calton cold!

Nice - I remember drinking that stuff in Perth many years ago - had totally forgotten about it!!

Cheers 🍺
