My First American Beer - Goose Honkers Ale by Goose Island Brewery

in #beer6 years ago

Found this American beer while I was out grocery shopping and decided to grab one to try it out. It only cost me around 1.5 euro, so couldn't really go wrong with this one (or could it?). After I got home and put away my groceries, I noticed something on the bottle...

Damn!!!

I took a close look at the label on the back of the bottle, and noticed that the beer was expired. Just by a few days, but still... I'm sure it was still fine to drink, but I wondered if that would alter the flavor in any way. I'm sure there's no extra fermentation in the bottle with this type of beer. Still drank it and it tasted a little bit flat, but fine otherwise.

When I looked up some reviews, I saw that there were quite a few people saying that the beer had very little carbonation. So I'm pretty sure the fact that my beer was a few days past its expiration date, didn't matter too much.

Taste & Appearance

Reddish colored, almost a dark honey-like appearance, faint sweet fruit aromas. It smells pretty nice, at this point I'm thinking this is going to be very good. Then, after my first sip I notice that there isn't that much taste to it. Very light flavors, not very much bitterness at all. Very refreshing, but I had expected a little bit more flavor.

Maybe it's because I'm used to drinking these heavily flavored Belgian beers, that this doesn't really appeal to me. Or have I just picked the wrong beer? I wouldn't put this beer down too much, because I could see this being very appealing to some people. At 4.3% ABV this is definitely supposed to be a very light beer.

This beer just wasn't my cup of tea, I'm sure that there are much better beers from the US that I do like. It's usually pretty hard to find them here, but supermarkets do have them occasionally. I'll go for an IPA next time, if I can find one or maybe an American wheat beer.

Do leave a comment if you've ever heard of this beer or share which beers you like!

You are really keen on drinking this beer even when you knew it was about to expire. Hahaha this shows your curiosity on drinking made in America beer. I believe the taste of the beer is still nice, there are other brands of America beer you can find , maybe you give us a review of other America beer that you will like to taste

Oh it already was expired :P But it's beer, it's already fermented, so it doesn't really matter if it's expired by a few days.

Though I don't drink, but it sure have a funny name and I never seen a red colour beer before, mostly yellowish... I'm sure it's fine since it's just expired
couple of days ago...

Have you tried any red ales, I have had some Irish ones and recently a Mexican one, but unfortunately I can't remember the names of the beers. But red ale as a type of brew, can definitely recommend it!

Yeah I drink them from time to time, not too often though. I really like Rodenbach

Thanks, I will look for that one!

That sure is a pretty coloured beer - shame that you didn't like it much :)

I wouldn't drink that crap if they were giving it away free. We have a beer here in Texas named Shiner. Just remember "There is nothing finer than a Shiner , unless it is Shiner Bock" it brewed by the Spoetzel Brewery in Shiner, Texas if you can get a hold of either the Shiner Blonde or the Shiner Bock you will really enjoy those beers.

That is pretty funny. I see Goose Island trucks driving around all the time, but I have never tried any of their "flavors" myself. We have so many craft breweries in my state that it is hard to decide what to drink when you go to the store. I had to pick out something for a friends birthday the other day and I had no idea where to start. If you had more access to stuff from here, I would have a long list of brews for you to try :)
