Mushrooms Under The Honey Cow

It was so wet this year that we have mushrooms growing everywhere. These are, I think, a type of Boleta growing under my horizontal beehives.

I like this type of hive because they are all one level and you can work on them without bending over or lifting heavy boxes. At this point in the season, our hives need to put away 60 lbs of honey in each box if they are going to have enough food to survive the winter.

Some of the strongest colonies might have a little extra late season honey in them that I can steal. Wildflower honey made in the late summer is a special treat because it is made from a wide variety of different floral sources and it has been ripening in the comb for a long time. You ever know what you are going to get, but it is always rich and complex.

We've talked about keeping bees eventually. My mother had honeybees for a while and now keeps bumble bees instead. That is also very neat about the mushrooms. Thanks for sharing this with us!

My neighbor kept bees in Honduras. The technique is probably similar in Panama. The colonies are smaller and there is a lot more swarming.

Yes I wonder how they would react to no winter. We do have lots of honey produced in Chiriquí province... which is next to us.

This looks amazing! This is eatable right ?

Boleta type mushrooms are edible, for the most part. I don't have enough confidence to try them, though.

The species within the Boleta family that are not edible just cause an upset stomach, so eating them is not dangerous, but I'm not that hungry.

The honey, on the other hand, is always fantastic. 😁
