Lack of Imagination in North American Suburbs

It seems like developing countries have better parks. In places like Canada and the US, they leave nothing but an empty field to cut, and a few trees. In places like Ecuador, they incorporate beautiful landscape design in their parks. Here's a comparison.

In Canada, you find a basic gravel pathway with an empty field surrounded by a school and a few trees.

Here's a park in Sigchos, Ecuador. A town with a population of 1272. You can notice the difference. This park has a interlocked pathway, a painted curb with flowers planted along the side. It has lampposts, and a fountain in the middle. If a small town in Ecuador can afford to maintain such a nice park, why can't we? It would give residents a reason to leave their homes and make new friends.
