On January 1, 2020, about 4,00,000 babies were born across the world. India was the biggest contributor to this figure, with 67,385 births, according to the UN Children’s Agency. With so many children being born, it is important to address baby health care. This will help the infant look and feel their best at all times. Also, the new parents would be less perplexed and at peace.

Here’s all you can do to ensure it is a less exhausting and more rewarding experience.

Effective Breastfeeding
Lactation consultants are available at most baby hospitals. They can help you understand how to position, feed and burp the baby. The yellow colostrum is packed with nutrients. It is the only food that must be given to the infant. You must hold the baby firmly, by supporting the head and neck. Bring the nipple close to the baby’s mouth until they latch on properly. In case, they are not being able to suckle, squeeze the milk out manually to feed.

Careful Bathing

Good baby health care includes not giving them a bath for the first 5-7 days. This is because a creamy layer, called vernix caseosa, is already acting as a barrier to the skin. A good time for a bath would be when this wears off. In the initial 1-3 weeks, try to give a sponge bath only. Dip a cloth in lukewarm water and gently wipe the skin and head. Use mild unscented soap, fresh and clean towels and soft bristled brush to bathe the infant. Wash the genitals by rinsing the area with warm water.

Proper Diapering

One of the obvious reasons for a baby crying is due to diaper discomfort. It could be soiled or is causing some form of irritation. Babies most likely wet 6-8 diapers every day, when feeding on breast milk solely. Therefore, frequent change is important. Use diaper powder, baby cream, baby wet wipes, a changing sheet and fresh diaper. Clean gently from front to back and leave the baby undiapered for some time. This will let the skin breathe and prevent rashes.

Firm Handling

Make sure to always wash your hands before touching your newborn. Never shake the child, since the internal organs are delicate. Always support the head while carrying upright or before laying them down. While rocking the child, use both hands always. When putting the child in a stroller, make sure they are fastened well, and the ride is not too bumpy.

Newborn care can get frustrating and challenging at times. However, you need to hold your patience with your tiny infant. Whenever you notice anything unusual, like persistent crying or temperature rise, get in touch with the pediatrician. Lastly, take good care of yourself too, so that you can provide good baby health care.
