Typhoon

A typhoon is one strong winds that moves in circle, that mostly comes with a strong and heavy rainfall. The typhoon is a giant tornado. In typhoons eye there is no wind, but in its eyewall it is where the strong winds occured.

In Philippines we have this what we called PAGASA (Philippines Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services. And in every city we have the DRRMO (Disaster Risks Reduction Management Office). They are the one who is responsible to issued and relay the following information.

Public Storm Warning Signal (PSWS) - is a warnings issued in PAGASA (Philippines Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) to let know how strong is the typhoon that is coming, and the location of it when the time it was issued by PSWS, and to where is the approximate way and what preparation is to be done or what else to do with the affected community where the typhoon is going to hit.

  • PSW Signal number #1 - winds with the strenght from 30-60 kph. The typhoon is expected within 36 hours.

  • PSW Signal number #2 - winds with the strenght from 61-100 kph. The typhoon is expected within 24 hours.

  • PSW Signal number #3 - winds with the strenght from 100-185 kph. The typhoon is expected to come within 18 hours.

  • PSW Signal number #4 - a very strong winds more than 185 kph. Typhoon is expected within 12 hours.

Things to do before the storm arrives:

  1. Prepared the radio, flashlight and extra batteries.

  2. Get ready for an emergency food that is not immediately destroyed like (can goods, biscuits) water container, first aid kit and clothes that can be first used and also plastic wrapper.

  3. And make sure that the house rope and windows can cope when the strong winds blow (for the household in a poor community, just also make sure that the pillars and walls of your houses can stand the strong winds by tying up and nailing it up);

  4. Cut the long branches of tree near of your house.

  5. Stay inside of the house until the storm ends;

  6. When it is needed to evacuate, make sure that the power supply in the house is turned off, the gas tank are closed, and the door is lock.
