Moon Day - 20th July

On this day, forty nine years ago the first man set foot on the Moon.

Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin are the two astronauts who landed the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20th 1969. I have a feeling that everybody knows about Armstrong, maybe few that he was followed by Aldrin 20 minutes later on the lunar surface. But do you know that the third person who piloted the command module Columbia in orbit was Michael Collins? Three craters, close to the landing spot were named after Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin.

Of course tonight I will be out with the telescope pointing at the Moon but I will not see the footprints on the surface left by the astronauts. I will try to make more pictures of the craters to share with you. Hopefullly the sky will clear.

This photo I took last night with the smartphone through the eyepiece of the telescope.

And the cross mark on the second photo is the place where the two astronauts have landed.

Last night I did not intend to take out the telescope seeing all the clouds.

However there are patches clearing and here we go again.

This is how it looks like through the eyepiece. The image is upside down when you look through reflector scope.
