What Mercury in your horoscope says about you

Your intellectual lens

Mercury in your horoscope reveals how you analyze your experiences and then organize what you learn from them. It is the lens, the filter, through which you receive information. This, of course, shapes your perspective -- your beliefs about how something works or what it means -- and will heavily influence how you behave as a result.

Your Mercury sign and house positions also give information about how you express yourself, character qualities you use when you communicate and the "slant" and prejudices -- both good and bad -- that surround your thoughts and the way you handle knowledge.

It makes your perspective unique.

Your Mercury energy helps you interpret life’s events -- and thus will show how the same experience will not mean the same thing to different people. Your history and natural proclivities shape your opinions and conclusions.

This is also part of the reason why honesty and open communication are essential to workable relationships because everyone sees the world through different eyes and each one navigates it with a different mind. Even single words -- let alone things as complex as concepts and theories -- don't mean the same thing to everyone.

One reason why people are different

Mercury never wanders far from The Sun in a horoscope. It is always in either the same sign as The Sun or in the sign immediately before or after. Today, The Sun is in Cancer -- and Mercury is in Leo. If you were born in Cancer, your Mercury will be in either Cancer, Gemini or Leo.

Having The Sun in one sign and Mercury in another (and The Moon in a third sign altogether) helps explain why not all people in the same Sun Sign are exactly alike (a common criticism from people who don't understand the shadings and nuances of Astrology itself.)

Two people with a different mental focus certainly won't think alike. They will see the world differently. They will interpret what happens to them differently. The same experience will mean different things to each of them.

Even two people with the same Mercury sign but with Mercury in a different horoscope house will behave differently and will certainly have different priorities.

Differences make a difference!

A person with Mercury in Leo in 2nd House (the house of possessions and sustenance) will pay a lot of attention to things like income acquisition, money management, the kind of possessions he has to use and show off, the way he supports himself and what it takes for him to survive.

He believes the way he acquires and uses resources says something important about him. Thus this area of life and how he handles it shapes his self-image. He needs to be proud of what he earns and what he owns.

A person with Mercury in Leo in 6th House (the house of work, health and daily routines) on the other hand will pay a lot of attention to things like the way he goes about his job, the kind of service he can provide for others, the efficiency of his habits and work strategies, the little details that turn his work from a slapdash effort into something truly impressive.

Things like performance, competence and quality of service matter to this person -- because those are the things that help define him ... in his mind. Literally. He needs to be proud of the way he makes life easier for himself and others. He needs to give something of value to justify his existence.

The elemental mind

Mercury in a Fire Sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is enterprising, dynamic and ego-centered. He wants respect for his ideas because they are and inspiring and motivating -- and because they belong to him.

Mercury in an Earth Sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is practical, focused and persistent. He wants respect for his ideas because they're useful, sensible and help others take care of themselves so they're not a burden to everyone else.

Mercury in an Air Sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is objective, critical, logical and interested in a wide variety of topics. He wants respect for his ideas because they're entertaining, informative, provocative -- and by talking with him people learn something new.

Mercury in a Water Sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) has a mind colored by intuition, feelings and emotions. He wants respect for his ideas because they're profound, sensitive, creative and connect people to dimensions of reality beyond the mere physical and material concerns.

Thank you for stopping by!

If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.

Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.

This is who I am.

About the art in our visual essays ...

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.

The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them. All of us at Enchanted Spirit are profoundly grateful to them for their generosity and skill ... and for the added grace, depth and dimension their art brings to ours.
