So ... Happy Birthday, Cancer!! You are the birthday child this month -- and if you're in the mood, we could talk a while about your strange and special nature.

So, I guess the question is ... are you in the mood? Moods, after all, are such a part of your character, that even if you're not in the mood at the moment ... in a little while you will be. That's a major fact of life with you ... you're, well, changeable. You've got a mood for every occasion ... and given enough time, you'll find the right one for this moment, too.

A creature of moods and emotions ...

Actually, your moods represent quite a symphony of emotions ... and they are not only one of your most significant characteristics, they are one of your greatest gifts. Feelings count with you. In fact, feelings count more than thoughts in most cases. Cancers pay attention to their intuitions, their gut reactions, their hunches, and their "take" on people, ideas, places, situations, and problems.

You have wonderful instinctive access to the levels of energy and thought that we consider psychic -- and you can use this talent to considerable advantage, making choices that defy logic -- or explanation -- but turn out to be inspired. When that happens, and it does so often when a Cancer is involved, you just can't argue with results.

... of intuition and inner wisdom

The process may drive the logical Earth and Air types crazy, especially when it defies reason and analysis, but the consistency of benefits Cancers get from following their special inner wisdom is some of the best evidence we have that this kind of knowledge from this ineffable source information is more valid and more trustworthy than all the graphs, tables, equations, and statistics those more "rational" signs put such stock in.

As a Cancer, your intuition is easily as refined and accurate as the more famous variety of your Pisces cousins, and you love to experience and explore all the shades, hues, tempos, and varieties of this most elusive faculty. Emotions light your world ... every bit as vividly as ideas do for the Air signs or the chance to accomplish something tangible and practical does for the Earth signs.

A creature of empathy and tenderness

One substantial asset that comes from this is an ability to be with someone emotionally in ways that help provide companionship and comfort -- especially in times of trouble. Cancers are famous for making just the right emotional gesture, saying just the right soothing word -- or nothing at all when that helps the most, and showing levels of compassion for another's anguished and injured spirit that jump-starts the healing process as nothing else in the world can do.

Cancers live in their feelings. They know how to be sensitive. They don't need a lot of explanation and background. They feel and sense and absorb what they need to know through channels they may not be able to describe in words that bring understanding to the rest of us ... but then words are a poor vehicle for conveying empathy in the first place. (Just ask anyone whose tried to get a note of that rare quality from a Gemini -- who can spell the word all right, but that's about all the truck he has with it.)

Coasting on the currents of life

Sounds like a wonderful thing to be, right? And if you're a Cancer you probably think so for sure. That's why you chose the sign after all -- because it is so congruent with who you are.

If you're not a Cancer and you need a little TLC and extra sympathy in your life, for heaven's sake find out who among your friends IS ... and let them do their thing!! Chances are you may not even have to take a poll on birthdays. Cancers are known for their gentle, tender, kind, and "mothering" ways. It's usually pretty obvious.

But always, there is another side to the story. And what is "sensitive" -- meaning receptive and responsive -- with just a little twist of the emotional mood-wheel becomes "sensitive -- meaning moody and easily bruised.

This is also part of the Cancer personality -- a roller-coaster ride of emotional highs and lows that can be hard on everyone, hardest of all on the Cancer person perhaps. After all, he or she is living inside that changeable world -- not just watching it from a sort of safe place outside.

There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.
