Astrological Compatibility -- It depends on what you're looking for

Looking for others like you

It's natural, of course. The moment someone comes to grips with the wisdom and potentials in Astrology, he wants to know about himself. The next thing he wants to know is ... who does he get along with? What Zodiac signs are likely to be his friends? Who is he apt to have problems with? Most of all ... who would be his best romantic partners???

It's also human nature to want simple answers. And if humans were simpler creatures, that might be possible, but they're not. Still the fact that some signs do share values and viewpoints, that they do come at life from the same direction suggests compatibility should also be easy. Theoretically it is. In practice ... well, that's another story.

It depends on what you're looking for.

I can tell you how it works on paper ... and why, but I can't give you a list of three or four answers to count on. Too often, people wanting a compatibility list are trying to solve problems much deeper than just a cluster of problem kinfolks and unsatisfactory associates. I realize astrology suggests such lists exist and that easy answers are possible. They aren't, and what purports to be may not be worth much.

A lot also depends on what you're looking for in a friend or a partner ... what "compatible" means to you. Yes, there are signs who think alike and act alike. They share common values, and in their opinions on what's important, they share common ground. Their basic personalities support and sympathize with one another. Each automatically understands where the other is coming from.

Many kinds of light and shadow

Yes, this can give you a head start on a satisfying relationship, but there are no guarantees. In astrology as in life, those are rare. Objectively, I can say all signs are important. Each plays a vital part in life's creative process. All signs are wonderfully unique. People contain different elements and experiences. And categories can be dangerous.

I also know I have my favorite signs ... and signs I figure from past history will give me grief. Maybe that's a self-fulfilling prophecy, but there it is. That's how reality is for me, and I live with it or work around it as the case may be.

Mostly though when considering "compatibility," you'll need to consider what you're looking for in a companion or life mate. (It might also help if you understood what you offer -- and how you go about asking for connections.)

Eventually, we'll talk about it all. Meanwhile, there's a lot of ground to cover -- and I've learned through writing for the internet that short bites are easier to digest and easier to remember than 12-course banquets packed onto one page.

There are others: The Elements -- Fire, Earth, Air and Water -- each have their categories. And so do The Qualities -- Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. The mixing and matching among them gets interesting. Among the next cluster of articles I'll show you why.
