The profession of the sitter as such appeared only at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Norms of religious morality were strictly preached in society, and a girl or woman from a respectable family could not agree to such a dubious occupation. Not everyone agreed to pose for painters even in their clothed form, and even to undress in front of the master, there could be no question!
How did the artists get out of this situation? They still found models. First of all, they went in kind to brothels. Sometimes you could find her in your own home. If the wife was not suitable for this purpose, then there were always servants at hand. Usually commoners willingly agreed to pose for a reasonable price, and for the servant the work of a model could be included in the due salary.
Nowadays, finding models willing to pose for nudity is no longer a problem due to the sexual revolution.
