Draw me like you draw your french.. trees?

in #art6 years ago

Have you ever put your pen on the paper and just started to doodle without any real plans? That's basically how most of my drawings ends up to be honest and that's excactly how I found my love for drawing trees. One day I sat, insanely bored in a math class while still in school, and just started to make strange lines on my paper. As the lines started to get all over the places they slowly but surely began forming the silliest tree that you can ever imagine, I swear, it was seriously butt ugly to say the least. I guess that to most people it would probably look at bit more like failed tentacle porn or something worse, but to me it was the most awesome tree, not because it was a good drawing but because of what I had unearthed in my mathematical boredom.
Now, that first tree-virgin drawing is long gone but I've proceeded to draw a lot of trees over the years. Somehow it makes me feel at ease letting the pencil or pen or whatever just dance over the material and it's a great stress reliever, you should try it if you haven't already :)

watercolor on paper

I really enjoy playing with watercolors and even though I have no training in using them it doesn't take much to make the colors interact with each other and create some kind of beauty. The whole silhouette things really plays well with a colorful background and just letting the pencil dance and create branch after branch is almost therapeutic.

B2-B4 pencils

I made this for @iwanderela for her hostel Hey Fellas, but I don't think I actually got to the point where I was happy enough with the outcome to actually give it to her. It took a bit more focus as I tried to play with the shapes of the branches to form the words "Hey Fellas" (In case you missed that yourself) and subsequently it got a bit too clunky for my taste. Maybe it's a clicheé but as the artist I never seem to find myself perfectly happy with the result and to this day I still correct small errors and add in some branches where they are needed.
Anyways, the point with this picture was actually to showcase the play with the branches, I find it quite amusing and more than a little bit challenging to make it seem "natural" and organic but at the same time make the message clear, wether it's a symbol like a heart or some piece of text you'll try to pen down.

Cardboard mosaic

Through my work as pedagog in the entry level school classes and my work in various institutions I've spend a lot of time drawing and being creative with the kids. Last year before going to the Philippines I was working in a school and we had a subject about making masic mosaics. The kids made a lot of great pieces and it was amazing to see the creativity their busy minds are bussing with. A few though needed a little inspiration so I sat down and made a few with them, showing them how to play with the colors and contours.
The tree above is one of the small pieces I made to inspire them to think a bit outside the box, hope you enjoy it as much as me and the kids.

Ordinary pencil on ordinary printing paper.. sooo ordinary

Grab your pencil or whatever is your favourite weapon of choice and pen down some trees with me, or don't, just go lie down and contemplate your life. Whatever you do though I wish you fun and peace of mind, take it easy, chill out and enjoy!

Thanks, but sadly, no talent.. just a lot of practice in boring math lessons :)
