Jewish House in Sofia
Sofia is full of monuments of architecture. Especially I like those who have an interesting historical background. One of these houses is the Jewish cultural center on the square "Vazrazhdane".
Before the Liberation of 30% of the population of Sofia were Jews. Of course, there were Jewish quarters in the city. Until 1879, it was part of the modern "Oborishche", and after, - according to the decision of the community, another quarter - the old "Yuchbnar" was inhabited by the Jewish poor and even got the nickname "Jewish ghetto".
So, on the territory of this so-called ghetto, the Jewish house "Beit a-Am" was built. As a club, a theater, a library and a gathering place for the residents of the quarter.
He was raised in 1934 at the expense of Jewish organizations, including the bank "Geul." Since 1978 it is considered a cultural monument.
The house still performs its functions. This is a Jewish cultural center. There are a club, a library, Hebrew courses, music clubs and an amateur theater, which, by the way, has a rich history and is famous for cultivating such prominent Bulgarian artists as Sabin Markov and Pavel Kurshumov.
In the last century in Beit Ha-Am there was a restaurant widely known for its incredibly tasty kebabs.
Now the building belongs to one of the varnish entrepreneurs.
