Frame making, part I - How I build a one of a kind wooden frame for a glass painting

in #art8 years ago (edited)

For each one of my glass painting originals, I make a custom made frame. Here is a detail of an almost finished one, after I started putting on the metal leaf

But lets start at the beginning! Today, I'd like to explain, how I build my frames for my glass paintings. They are one of a kind and each made to complete the piece. They are an essential part of the artwork.

I usually start with a drawing with all the measurements and then start cutting the wood accordingly. A bit of sanding, and the basic parts are done.

Next, I prepare the details. In this case, two rounded elements for the top and the bottom. First glue some pieces of wood together and get this thing ready for turning...

...which is the next step

ready for another one

Then the parts are cut into the shape needed. Some chiseling and I have my parts ready to be assembled

In part II, I'll show you, how I put it all together and put the metal leaf on.

By the way, here is a preview of the finished frame. The painting is still in progress

Thanks a lot for the recommendation... you got me curious! And I think for a creative person like yourself, it would be very rewarding to actually build something

This is amazing that you make your frames too! My grandfather from my father side was a carpenter and we still have his carpenter table as you have one I see in your pictures. His carpenter table, I don't know if this is the correct English for it, is older then one hundred years. :) I didn't have the chance to learn from him and I feel I would have liked it, because he past away before I got born.

As creative and artistic as you are, you would surely have enjoyed to do some woodworking with your grandfather. Its very rewarding to see, how it all comes together.

Although I'm not the expert, I think the name for the table is bench or work bench
