Sometimes... Even Retail Stores Get to Take a Snow Day!steemCreated with Sketch.

We have had a fairly mild winter, here in western Washington.

Notwithstanding the fact that we had about 10 "High Wind Incidents" that blew down power lines and caused blackouts, it has been a mild winter.

Not a single snowflake was seen, in November, December or January.

Last night we had a fairly peaceful Gallery Walk — the last one, before Valentine's Day — that was quite well attended because the weather as pleasant and even warmish, for this time of the year.

On the Way to Work

As I made my way to work around 10:30, I noticed a couple of snowflakes here and there, along the way.

As they were few and far between — and it was 38 degrees (that's about 3, for you metric folks) — I didn't pay it much mind.

So I did some paperwork, and thought it slightly odd that so few people had come in. Of course, the Red Dragonfly Gallery is underground so we can't actually see what's going on outside.

So I walked to the top of the stairs to have a look. And this is what I saw:

Seems to me that a St. Bernhard in a blizzard across the street... would be a pretty good explanation for why I'd seen almost nobody.

The dog seemed quite content — even at home — with the situation.

Since the snow wasn't actually sticking to anything (yet!), I decided to go back below grade to do more paperwork.

30 Minutes later I decided to look again.

Which was a good thing, because now the snow was starting to stick to things, and to pile up on cars.

Might not seem like anything to many people out there, but this is a very hilly town, and only the main arterials are sanded, when it snows. Unless it gets really bad.

So, at 3:00pm, I decided to "call it" and close the Gallery for the day. Hadn't seen anyone in over an hour... and we were now an hour past the photo at left... pavement and sidewalks getting white.

It turned out to be a wise choice!

We have a lot of "microclimates" around here. Downtown is at sea level, and by the water... and a couple of degrees warmer than other parts of town. Just a mile away... and only 200 feet above sea level... there was already 2 inches of snow on the ground, and a thickening layer of slushy snow on the roads.

I got home just fine. More microclimates. By the time I was at our house — about five miles away, by the water on the other side of the peninsula — the roads were just wet again, and there was maybe 1/2 inch of snow on the lawn.

But you have to be alert around here. No more than an hour after I got home, it was a virtual whiteout here. So I'm glad I decided to come home!

Hope you've all had a great weekend wherever you are, and thanks for reading!
