Contest Interprets Reality. 4th Delivery @racaldecon

in #art5 years ago

This is my participation in the Fourth Contest Interpretation of Reality. For this occasion and in keeping with the month of October, whose theme is terror, an art was requested based on the celebration of these dates which is the Halloween or the Halloween, through which each artist had to communicate with an image his interpretation of this celebration including elements of horror, suspense and fear.

About Halloween

Halloween (contraction of English All Hallows' Eve, in Spanish: «All Hallows Eve»), also known as Halloween or Night of the Dead, is a modern celebration result of the syncretism originated by the Christianization of the party of the end of summer of Celtic origin called Samhain.
It is celebrated internationally on the night of October 31, especially in the Anglo-sphere, such as Canada, the United States, Ireland or the United Kingdom, and, to a lesser extent, in other places such as Spain and Latin America. Despite belonging to the Anglo-Saxon world, in Australia5 and New Zealand this custom is not observed as much as in the other countries.
The day is often associated with the colors orange, black and purple and is strongly linked to symbols such as the jack-o'-lantern. The typical Halloween activities are the famous Dulce or trick and the costume parties, in addition to the bonfires, the visit of haunted houses, the jokes, the reading of scary stories and the viewing of horror movies.
In some countries of Latin America it is customary to go out at night with the biggest children disguised to ask for sweets. The elderly usually go to night parties after taking the little ones to ask for sweets.

Trick or Treat

Concept

About this last paragraph in which one speaks about one of the most famous traditions of these dates Sweet or Trick I wanted to inspire myself for the illustration that I made.
Before continuing, I think it is important to have a brief overview of where this tradition comes from, a text that I post below:

Originally the trick or treat (in English "Trick-or-treat") was a popular legend of Celtic origin according to which not only the spirits of the deceased were free to roam the Earth on Halloween night, but all kinds of entities from all the spiritual kingdoms. Among them was a terribly malevolent one who wandered through towns and villages, going from house to house, asking precisely for "trick or treating." The legend says that the best thing was to make a deal, no matter how much it cost, because not to agree with this spirit (which would receive the name of jack-o'-lantern, with which the traditional Halloween pumpkins are known) , he would use his powers to do "trick", which would consist of cursing the house and its inhabitants, giving them all kinds of misfortunes and curses, like making the family sick, killing cattle with pests or even burning their own home. As protection, the idea arose to create horrendous forms in the pumpkins, in order to avoid encountering this specter (and over time, due to the mental association between the spirit and the gourds [citation needed], the name of this would be given to them , which is how they are known today when this party arrives).
Actually, although the translation "trick" in Spanish has been generalized by the English "trick" and "treatment" literally by "treat", in the case of "Trick-or-treating" it is not a trick proper, but rather a fright or a joke, so a more accurate translation would be, for example, "scare or sweet" or "mischief or sweet."
Trick or Treat

Nowadays children walk from door to door asking for sweets, disguised as their favorite characters, with the phrase "Sweet or Trick" from the English expression trick or treat. If the adults give them candy, money or any other type of reward, it is interpreted that they have accepted the deal. If on the contrary they refuse, the boys will spend a small joke to them, being the most common to throw eggs, foam of shaving or hygienic paper on the house or against the door.

In this way, in the illustration I made for this installment of Interprets Reality I wanted to represent this tradition, in which several characters walk through the lonely streets towards the houses asking for sweets; those who have refused have received an occasional prank, while a very happy witch flies through the air on her broom and with her cat celebrating her day. Although it was requested to encourage fear and suspense with art, I went for the fun part of the festivity that although it certainly does not generate the terror we know, but to me in particular I would be a little afraid of not having candy and that I did some mischief to my house, there is the suspense of this illustrated story.

The Sketch Process

As usual, this illustration was made with traditional techniques. So I started the sketch with simple materials such as pencil and paper. I also used the technique of the perspective of a vanishing point to have an aerial view and thus have the witch in the foreground while the city or town and its tradition are in the background. First I located the elements that I wanted to interact in the illustration with soft lines, placing the vanishing point where all the lines that make up the town go and superimposing the main character's scheme on it.

On the preliminary scheme I began then to give the details to each element, including the details of the main character until finishing the sketch.

The Coloring Process

After the sketch, I selected a special watercolor card, because although I decided to use colored pencils, I wanted the texture of the surface I used to help create some texture in the application of color.
I decided to start with the main character since it is not only in the foreground but its details are more striking and colorful.

Then and little by little I was giving the details to the context, including characters, accessories and tricks.

Finally to finish the coloration I finished giving the tones to the context of the base, such as the street, sidewalks and gardens added to the outline.

Finished the process of coloring by hand, I digitized the image and with some adjustments of brightness and contrasts this was the final result.
