I made this painting from a place of pain, pain caused by the terrible state of things in my country Nigeria currently. The inflation rate is second to none, the poor are getting poorer and struggling to survive. Many even find it hard to feed.

I needed to get a sachet of paracetamol for my mum and with all confidence I only took a 50 Naira note though I had more cash (this was the normal price after all). I got there and surprisingly, it was 70 Naira! The walk back home was very frustrating firstly because I had to make the trip again and also because I was reminded of the crazy inflation rate.

And then I thought of the common man, people like the man in this image, who do tedious labour everyday and get paid peanuts. How do they make it through each day? Where do they sleep? Won't some of them eventually become menaces to the society?

I just hope we get to see better days very soon.

I took the reference photo myself about 2 years ago I think, waiting for the perfect time to paint it since. As soon as I thought of making some art to express my feelings the image came to mind.
