HOW TO DRAW A PIXIE THE LUTIN

In this post, we're going to tackle a more difficult exercise than it seems, the study of a creature from fables, the pixie. A priori, nothing could be simpler you will tell me; he's a little, mischievous character wearing a pointed hat, sometimes a member of Santa's team when he's not roaming the squirrels in the forest! Well in reality this is the major difficulty with this type of subject, knowing the codes but also knowing how to appropriate them and play with them!

THE LUTIN, A QUICK PRESENTATION WITH A VIEW TO THE DRAWING

So don't worry, I'm not going to embark on an eight-chapter study of the origins of the pixie and how it evolved throughout history ...

Let's say that traditionally the pixie is a small humanoid creature. And again, know that the "elf" has not always had this injunction to be small ... It is customary for him to be of a cheerful and joking character, even teasing or sometimes even frankly annoying.

We group together under the term elf various characters from various backgrounds, the korrigans of Brittany, the German kobolds, the Irish leprechauns, the leprechauns, to name only the most famous.

According to the vagaries of languages ​​and mythologies, elves have also been confused (see assimilated) with dwarves and elves.

Depending on its origin, the elf can be affiliated with the home (by that I mean "at home"), water, night, forest ... All this to conclude that the elf is not ultimately not a being so smooth and uniform as it seems.

Let's not forget that you have every right to have fun with this character from the legends. Want pixies with big noses and really long beards? Perfect. You see them rather gloomy and starving. It's up to you ! Or preferably plump and greedy? OK it's noted ! You have carte blanche, but to guide you, to give you a basis, I will offer you some "models".

STEP BY STEP DRAWING

We are going to draw a pixie lady in the middle of a mushroom bowl. Since the pixie is a small humanoid, it's best if you're a little bit comfortable with character drawing already.

Step 1 :

I place the "mass" of the head by already bringing out a small nose, with the neck. Be careful to place the back of the neck in line with the back of the head.

2nd step :

I draw the arm in front of us, folded, the mushroom basket will rest in the crook of the arm.

Step 3:

From the back of the neck I pull the back, straight, and in front of it I form the thorax. Notice that the bust is quite small in proportion to the head. I don't mark the chest to keep the character looking "juvenile / innocent". I define a little more the nose, small and curved, place the eyes, the lips and the ears which I deliberately make quite large.

Step 4:

I shape the legs, like the bust, they are rather "short".

Step 5:

I place a pointed cap on the character's head. Make sure that your cuff is wide enough for the circumference of the skull and deep enough on the head so that it does not fall. If you draw your beanie just hanging over the hair it shouldn't hold and it won't look good. Here I place the cap just above the ears. The circle of the skull is well included in it. I sketch the hair, the basket and the skirt.

Step 6:

I draw with more application over my construction lines and I add some decorative elements. I add a knot to the basket, a little material (I suggest the mesh) to a small cardigan, to the wicker, and draw a petticoat under the dress.

APPLY THE COLOR TO THE DRAWING

For the color, I choose fairly soft shades.

We made a classic yet modern take on the pixie. Classic because we are on a small humanoid, with a cap, and modern ... modern because we have drawn a lady pixie! We could have opted for ONE pixie, with a long beard, pipe in hand, and that would obviously have been very relevant!

The ideal is to master a minimum the realization of a classic human character, because at this time you can have a little more fun with the variations of physics and poses. Like many imaginary characters, the pixie lends itself well to re-interpretation. In addition, he is a clever and facetious character, take advantage of it! Have fun !
