Planet Caravan

in #art6 years ago

Quite a while back I made this drawing called Planet Caravan after one of the trippy and strange songs by the British proto-heavy bluesband, BLACK SABBATH.

Planet Caravan

I wanted the drawing to have the same gritty and slightly unrealistic feel of the song, so I used a lot of halftones, not as shaders but as a way to distort the cross-hatching and for the decorative effect.

The song is a strange song, rooted between the hazy cosmos of the hippie brain and the real world, and as the spaceships reminded me of whales drifting through the water I decided to simply make one of them a whale to further add to the unrealness of the drawing. You can see it in the centre of the image.

Here is the Black Saabath song:

I have that LP in vinyl! It is awesome how tracks like Paranoid, Iron Man, Fairies wear boots and of course the ultimate trip, Planet caravan, fit in the same release. Ozzy's vocals are coming from outside the known cosmos!

Oh... i only have it on CD - that is a great record and I would love having it as an LP. I think Ozzy's mind, at the time, was somewhere in the outskirts of an event horizon.

A classic LP, one of the milestones of rock music. I am not as lucky as having an 1970 original record though, it is a later release but it can't be later than 1976 according to wikipedia. Unfortunately, I don't have it readily available to check out, my LPs are stored away in another location, together with my comics -- I should have indexed them before storing them away, I know :(

Well, I am lucky enough to have room for all my music and books and comics - but I do not own Paranoid. Damn... I also have put all my CD's on FLAC-files so I just listen to it from the computer (which is connected to my hifi-system), but I do listen to LPs from time to time.

I have not touched my LPs for 20 years or so... maybe it's time I got a new turnrable, plug it in, go get the LPs and start converting them too. I've done something similar with DIVX videos when it took several hours to convert a 90-min DVD movie -- hmm.. that's a big story, fit for a separate post!

By the way, the first time I looked at this post's drawing, I thought it was a "caravan" of planes dropping bombs, like in a WW2 Blitz...

Damn, your drawing fits this song perfectly. Like you said, it's really trippy and has a weird, depressing tone to it. Your image is exactly that!

I always feel like it takes guts to go heavy black like that because things can go wrong in a hurry. You pulled it off masterfully. I had never heard that Black Sabbath song until now. Music is a great tool to set the mood for what you're drawing because it can "anchor" the feeling you are trying to express. That was a good tune, it reminded me of Pink Floyd. I'm a David Bowie man when I'm drawing outer space, but then again, everyone probably is.

Like in movies where the actors run around in darkness, but what you see is a black screen and what you feel is the old lady in the next seat's hand on your crouch...

I'm glad to have introduced you to it - it is slightly heavier and a bit younger than Bowie - but the theme is the same I guess.

When you listen to a song and see a picture and they just make each other cooler somehow, then you know talent is present.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Well, thank you :)

Have you ever heard the Pantera cover of "Planet Caravan"?

Yes, I do and I had actually placed it in the post, but then I removed it again, not because it is bad - I love Pantera - but because the drawing was made for the original version.

Rad drawing. Almost clickbait for me because of my unending spring of love for sabbath, PC being one of my all time favorites. Double credit for -not- throwing some oil projection cliche “sabbath” stuff into it. : )

Thanks, mate!

I seriously love the album Paranoid - and the song you picked was highly fitting for a great illustration!!

Yes, it is a great album - shows that stoned people sometimes actually make great stuff.

amazing photo you are artist m8 <3
