How To Defeat Resistance. My Most Extensive Painting Process Documented.

in #art7 years ago (edited)

Today, I'd like to show you that creative process rarely comes in a straight line. My latest painting of little girl sitting under Sun Tree (I have not named it yet to be honest) is a great example of it. Path to the final result was curvy, which is not uncommon. What's rare about it is that I documented the progress quite well.

The final result. By no means this was an easy birth.

As a pro artist, you need to become one resilient mathafaka. You have to rebel against a powerful enemy who possesses intimidating war machinery and numerous allies. You'll be outnumbered and hopeless, but if you persist, you won't ever be alone.

Resistance has countless tricks up her sleeve to prevent you from picking up the brush (pen, music instrument, microphone...you name it) and taking the first creative step up the grind. Resistance will make you procrastinate to the latest possible moment, selling you one fascinating and credible story after another why Now is not the good moment to lift you ass from the sofa and do your work.

This is how this adventure started...

You need to cultivate the rock solid unbreakable habit to put in your hours of creative work. Daily. No matter how shitty you feel, no matter how pleasing the option B (escape strategy) seems, no matter how crappy the result of your efforts on that particular day might turn out. As far as your limbs are still attached to your body, you have to deliver the mission, you gotta execute.

About an hour down the road

There's a secret that a real artist knows that wannabe artists don't, and the secret is: It's not the creative part that's hard. What's hard is sitting down (or standing up) and begin. What keeps us from sitting down is Resistance.

An angel, baby and Earth. Am I getting mad?

I absolutely urge everyone who has a calling (which is EVERYBODY, what differs is just level of awareness/denial of it) to read Steven Pressfield's “War of Art”. Read it back and forth. Read it upside down. Tattoo that shit deep in the annals of your subconscious. This is a bible of anyone who has a dirty secret dream to leave the sewer of mediocrity and rat race and become a pro. Just read it and thank me later.

Divine Mother! Really?:)

IMG_1636.JPG

Ok so after spending 2 days on it, I had to finally face the reality: I don't like it

IMG_1637.JPG

Ditch the weird looking Holy Mother, destroy the Earth, keep the baby!

IMG_1638.JPG

New idea strikes me: baby in the tree!

IMG_1639.JPG

Ok this time I'll pull it off. That baby looks good nestled up there!

Fancy rose clouds. I still believe in it

IMG_1643.JPG

At last I gave up the pretty blue halo. Doesn't match the rest of colors. And the Girl under the tree comes to life.

IMG_1644.JPG

Tree looks like tree now, but I'm still clinging on the baby sunny-boy.

IMG_1647.JPG

This was just about when it hit me: the baby has to go. It looks weird as f..k. Shit, all that precious time wasted! That's a joke. I know very well that no time working is ever wasted. If I did not follow whatever came to me, I would not come to the final result. Roads of heaven are thorny and curvy but worth every drop of sweat and blood in the end!

Final phase before I start the final version of tree. And even that I started over 2 times before I landed the right shape that I liked bad enough to say “that's my tree!”

Unfortunately I forgot to take a few snapshots of the very last phase, which is a pity cause adding the leaves and the rays of sun filtered through them at the very end was lots of fun. I got carried away by Muse, when she rewarded my persistence and sucked me into her flow where all the distractions of outside world are forgotten.

I hope you got the lesson from this one. As soon as you face Resistance, you enter a bloody business. You become ruthless mercenary, a rebel. You gotta persist and let the idea of pretty result go and just keep on grinding. You're not here to please anyone. You're not here to seek approval. You're here to do your job, to hone your god given talents and defy anything standing in your way.

Muse always comes to aid those who don't give up.

Keep rocking it fellow warriors! You got all it takes!

Much Love,
Jan

Only after I put them together I realized that the girl and boy look like they've been looking for each other. Twin flames? Only Divine mama knows!

Beautiful work man.. I can't ever say it enough. You're very deserving of positive feedback. Going to resteem this one and share it on my Facebook page as well.
Thanks for the great inspiration as I myself am facing some pretty significant resistance in my artform as well! I know I just need to keep at it and keep working at it, even if it's not perfect.. I need to get it as acceptable as I can without spending TOOOOO much time on it.. And I can definitely tend to do that! So this is a good reminder for me today. Thanks!

Buy Pressfield's "War of Art" bro @apolymask. It'll shed uncompromising light on how to face Resistance and in how many ways resistance shows. It has got myriad of faces. It is hiding behind your every move. Yes never focus on result but on the moment. Thank you deeply for your support and kind words, I truly appreciate it!

I've read the book already. Good book! Though it often helps to be reminded! :)
I wouldn't say never focus on the result.. Just don't obsess over it so much it paralyzes you or lessens the quality of your work.

You're welcome! Thanks for sharing your great artwork and words and energy with us!

Very well said . You can keep the result in the "peripheral vision" if you have any idea of the desired result, which I often don't. You're absolutely right- obsession = attachment = you're in for trouble :) I'm glad you read the book already.

As always, a delight to come across your posting!

When placed in location where winds hit, a tree will grow with twists... Rare are the ones protected enough to grow without much twists, where the forest is thick enough and strong enough to protect the young one and allow them to grow as straight as an arrow...

The process you go through seems very familiar to me and I sure can relate. Thanks for sharing with us all. I'll pass this one down the road to a few friends and upvote it as well.

All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

Brother @eric-boucher ! So good to hear from you and thank you for your lovely comment. I was thinking of you! Are you almost moving from Haida Gwai? Much Love!

I'm actually leaving Haida Gwaii on the 3rd week of July and will officially arrive in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, around the 1st of August. Looking forward to meeting you, when the time is ripe. Glad to see your paintings and the sharing of your thoughts on Steemit.com again! Namaste :)

Love what you say about trees here, I just came from commenting on photos of exactly that sort of tree.

WOW!!! Gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your process! People get the misconception that every piece is just going to FLOW perfectly and the first time it doesnt they quit! Your work is really Amazing, can't wait to look through the rest of your posts :)

Thank you so much @ldbkat! Yes sometimes it's indeed a total purgatory :) Thank you for reading!

Get down , get down , damn good !

I get your idea when painting, you paint within sequence (sorry I want to explain in English but I know your style about your process to make a painting). Anyway nice painting specially "The sun tree ". :)

thanks bro @happyphoenix ! Appreciate your input!

PS, you're no longer just one of my favorite painters.. You're now one of my favorite artists in general.

well I'm at loss of words for this one bro! Deep bows!

Amazing post, oh the resistance! I am looking for War of Art immediately! I really enjoyed your process here. We can't stay attached when the piece screams for us to throw out the baby with the weird angelface. ;) I too have scrapped plenty of plan A thru maybe LMN. It's always better when we feel free to discard these early explorations

Awesome, thanks for reading @creationofcare (love your nick here btw). Yup it's a littly handy book that will serve you well. Thank you for sharing your experince too!

Jan, you are my well of inspiration, thank you for that! And for the lessons learned in this post! I'll thank you for the book later ;D Namaste brother!

That is a beautiful gift for me to hear that @oceansoul. Sending lovely sunshine and blue ocean all the way from Maui, Hawaii. Much Love

It's the least I can give you, bro! Thanks for the sunshine and ocean, they came to me today :D Namaste!

Love this! Its a close-up of your original "Tree of Life" of which I have a print of in my living room :) The 2 paintings compliment each other side by side, would be nice if they went to the same owner! On a side note.. the baby and Holy Mother you were working with in the beginning was lovely also.. I hope you don't abandon the idea.

Thanks for telling me Jaime! Always feel your support. God knows what will become of holy mom and her child :D
