Artistic space #108 - René Magritte and surrealism
Today I bring you one of the most influential artists of the Surrealist art that was based on the critique of the system of codification and artistic valuation that existed in Europe during and after the Second World War. I'm talking about René Magritte. Come with me to know some facts about his life and work.
René Magritte born in Belgium in 1898, years later his family would move to the city of Châtelet if he had not moved to this city the most probable thing is that his life had not been devoted to art, it was precisely in Châtelet where he took his first steps in painting, his family of scarce resources moves regularly and even the small Magritte spent many years without going to school because he did not have economic resources. There were so many financial problems that drastically affected Magritte's mother who in 1912 committed suicide while going through a great depression.
This fact marked the life of the artist leading to produce many works where it explicitly touches the theme of his mother, after a while, Magritte could be linked again with impressionist painters of the time, so his first works were in this style. Determined to follow the artistic path, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he met by other painters the most current of art in Europe, styles in birth as futurism or cubism caught the attention of the painter, but it was the Dada movement that after a while would guide him to link with surrealist art.
In the matter of love, he met Georgette who would become his wife and companion for the rest of his life. It wasn't all about painting in the life of Magritte, who had to work for many years making advertising posters, or album covers.
Before dedicating himself to painting, he had to work as a graphic artist, designing advertising posters, tapestries or record covers, among others, in order to earn a living, but at the same time he continued painting and showing his works and even exhibiting them in modest galleries, By 1920, after being able to solve his economic problems, he was able to devote more attention to painting, so he began to participate in both individual and collective exhibitions. The rider is considered to be his first surrealist work, at the same time he associates himself with other painters of the movement such as Nougé, Lecomte or André Sourisque.
He spent some time in France and then returns to Belgium, and the Creature gallery, which he had been able to set up thanks to the partnership with the aforementioned painters, had to close and was again left without economic support, returning to the advertising world.
All ready for his peak in his career as a painter, he managed to travel to New York and London where he was already selling his paintings on a regular basis and being recognized by international art critics, he made commissions in painting for the casino Knokke le Zoute or the Palace of Congress in Brussels.
During his artistic career he managed to vary his style a lot, but without ceasing to produce surrealism, he was always cataloged as an artist who broke the laws and the common order established by art. And he achieved it only by using elements of everyday life.
René Magritte died of cancer at the age of 68 and was buried next to his wife. This closed a chapter but opened the minds of many artists, especially pop artists who saw in the painter an influence and incalculable legacy.
