"Looks like we got reports of a giant plush dog rampaging throughout the city!"

This is a flat color toony style with a toony background commission for Farmdog. Never thought you would see destruction by such a soft critter eh? ;)

Foreground

• Canvas Prep/Rough Sketch

  Layers Used:

  Canvas Background layer

  Rough Sketch layer

  With a neutral colored background, I draw over it a rough sketch of the character and his pose and the buildings.

• Fine Sketch

  Layers Used:

  Fine Sketch layer

  I draw over the rough sketch with a finer sketch for more details.

• Lineart

  Layers Used:

  Foreground Folder -> Lineart layer

  After the sketch meets the client's satisfation, I begin the linearts.

• Base Color

  Layers Used:

  Foreground Folder -> Base Color layer

  For this, since it was a little complex for how the character interacts with the buildings, I select using the contiguous "wizard" tool all the areas outside not only the character but also the foreground buildings and street's parameters as well, invert the selection, and then fill in the area with a neutral color. Do it this way to avoid having tiny gaps in the base color.

• Foreground Building Color

  Layers Used:

  Foreground Folder -> Building Color layer

  I add in the colors of the buildings near the character.

• Primary Color

  Layers Used:

  Foreground Folder -> Color Folder -> Primary Color layer

  I carefully draw in the chracter's primary color. I can draw outside the chararcter's parameter since it is masked to the based color so you won't see it when the mask is on, but do not draw over building colors.

• Detail Color

  Layers Used:

  Foreground Folder -> Color Folder -> Detail Folder -> (Folder's color layers)

  Then I add in the character's other color details.

Background

• Sky Color

  Layers Used:

  Background Folder -> Sky layer

  Simply add in a gradient blue color sky for the background using the gradient tool.

• Buildings Color #1

  Layers Used:

  Background Folder -> Primary Color layer

  Draw in some silhouettes of the farthest distant buildings.

• Lineart

  Layers Used:

  Background Folder -> Lineart layer

  Drawing in some linearts for the second layer of buildings. Make sure they are enclosed as you will see in the next step.

• Buildings Color #2

  Layers Used:

  Background Folder -> Primary Color layer

  Temporarily turn off every layer that is needed to turn off except the background lineart layer and the secondary color layer.

Simply use the fill tool (make sure the fill tool is not "limited to current layer") and color inside the lines where the buildings will be.

• Final Check/Final Result

  Layers Used:

  (Various layers)

  I turn back on all the layers after the secondary layer of buildings are colored.

Then I look over the drawing for any mistakes that I can see or any other details I may need to make.

Then the drawing is completed.
