Yorkshire Sculpture Park

We spent today at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park based in, you guessed it, Yorkshire. (West Bretton, between Huddersfield and Wakefield to be accurate)

It’s a beautifully massive 500-acre estate with an incredible historic landscape dotted with huge artistic sculptures - new and old.

On a day like today it was beautiful to explore. Sunshine filtered through a hazy low-lying cloud in the hills, with no wind at all was pretty perfect.

Nature was just showing off. Bloody show off.

The YSP have rotating artist residencies throughout the year, so there is always fresh work - both outside on the fields and inside the state-of-the-art galleries.

There's almost too much to see, especially when with kids.

This one (below) was inside the gallery. It looked curious from a distance...

...and it's even cooler close-up.

But, I saw THIS piece of work (below) which really blew me away.

An artist has taken a raw tree trunk and has carefully carved back the many layers to reveal a beautifully crafted ‘inner tree’ - all in one piece. That’s mad isn’t it?
You can see how the wood blends from smooth to rough. Amazing.

It’s absolutely spell binding to see, and it’s a real a monster clocking in at about 15ft high.

It’s a really pure piece of work and a stand out one for me...at least, that’s how I feel about it.
Maybe it’s not someone else’s cup of tea.

I guess that’s the beauty of sculpture art, eh?
