One of my sons once dropped a small tin of paint on his big toe... We had to wait for the thing to turn black and fall off in order for a new one to grow in.

More recently (last summer), I dropped a lap desk edge first (of course) onto my big toe... This process was longer and more drawn out. When I was on holiday, I even had to put polish on it just to keep it from falling off at a bad time... (It was about half grown out by that point) - even now (about 8 months after the injury) the injured part is at the very top of the nail... I should be able to trim off the remaining evidence in another month, lol.
