Russia floats third in class of nuclear icebreaker set to guide ships through Arctic

in #arctic5 years ago

Russia has floated its third next-gen nuclear icebreaker – the Ural – designed to lead ships through the thickest ice sheets in the Arctic. When completed these type of vessels will become the world's largest and most powerful.

The Ural is the third ship of Project 22220, set to become the most powerful and biggest nuclear icebreakers in the world. The icebreakers of this type are expected to be able to crush through an ice sheet of up to three meters thick. The colossal ships are measured over 170 meters long – like a full-scale athletics stadium – and are as tall as a five-story building in its superstructure section.

The floating ceremony went smoothly at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg on Saturday, with the obligatory champagne bottle successfully broken on the hull.

As the ship was sliding into the water, however, its port side anchor chain plummeted to the ground, damaging some temporary structures in progress. Fortunately, the shipyard workers evaded the thick chain and no one was injured in the mishap.

The other two vessels, the Arktika and the Sibir have been floated over the past few years and remain under construction. The Ural itself is scheduled to be fully completed by 2022.

The maiden ship, the Arktika, started receiving its first batch of nuclear fuel in mid-May, and is expected to enter service later this year. The ships of Project 22220 are designed to be capable of operating both in blue water and in rather shallow debouchments of Siberian rivers.

Over the past few years, Russia has been actively modernizing its icebreaker fleet, launching both nuclear and conventionally powered vessels. Such ships are the key to successfully operating in the Arctic region, and the additions to the icebreaker fleet are expected to further boost sea traffic past the northern shores of Russia.

Unfortunately with the reducing Arctic Ice Cap ships like these will soon become obsolete. It does however look like it would make a good "Tender" type of ship.

Don’t worry. Long after these class of ships are decomissioned, there will still be enough ice for their successors.

please don't tell him plants breath co2... that would shatter his little conditioning :). Wanting carbonfree energy sources, doesn't mean being on board with the climate change narrative and objectives.

btw !!! about the post :

n the article, if you need an icebreaker, you can sail alone ! I really don't care, but simply please, I hope the non artic nations will not try to sneak in.... for me, this is russian territory, and any trespacing warant death ! no joke no mercy, polar bears feed they will be, always a calorie more will be welcomed...

making the bears fat with the bodies of the enemies of eternal russia !! win- win !

how are the tigers doing? are the poacher being killed? as always it's a great ground for a live training exercice for recruits... killing a poacher, first blood :).

the sacred responsibility of the russian people... making the wild siberian tigers eternal... or at least until the heaven decide. or resaid, bringing the wild native (knowledge full, cultural and territorial) siberian tigers to the end of time...

for me the enemies of the wild siberian native tigers are just feed, nothing more than steaks, they could be rich, poor, or what ever in between, I just don't give a damn, the tiger > them. and as they have no values or rights, using them as live training practice targets is a very good use of those things, and the best, there is no need to listen to their "excuses" or lamentation, it's just first blood seeked, aka experiencing to kill... like the tiger do :).

I forgot to copy paste that... :/

ahhh !!! finally !! you read my mind :) !!!

Nothing beat russia, we want more , we want to know !!! what is going on in russia? what is great, what is new, what is trending, what is falling, what is has been? who knows... so big , so wide, so yuge !!! so white and others !!! so many things ! so few on air !!!

I believe at least a few single digit percent of daily show should be on and about russia. Not always when there is something bad ! Open !!! and from all aspect of life ! from the most sophisticated and hard to understand to the most trivial and even ridicule ! We don't care, we wanna know ! wanna discover, wanna see! see the new, the horizon, the wideness the space, the liberty !

more !!! so we can question more about russia ! what is going on !!!

best part isn't it?

@sweecee I wouldn't mind more information on Russia. Even though the "elite class" seems to have learned a good lesson from the U.S. oligarchs and their greed, I find the Russian Culture fascination.
Be Well,

thanks ! I don't like the world culture... People ! what are the russian people up to? I saw vasilly and his wolf... the ass fight... more later on on this... but yeah, it's always great to see what's going on, and not only on those mad dash cams...

We can only hope. With Climate Change and the receding Ice Caps, North and South, there is the question of "will it stop in time?" With the U.S. playing the Fossil Fuel high ground game, there may not be much of anything left in a few years. I do hope that you are right, though.

Will Russia has a plan to explore Arctic? Besides, this kind of ship has a power to sink warships ramping em.
