A House to Prolong Your Life

in #architecture6 years ago

I recently went to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London to see "The Future Starts Here" exhibit. One of the more innovative and curious projects was a house designed to prolong your life. These architects believe that a design like this one can help you live longer. Do you think that is possible?

I will qualify this to state I am not qualified to answer, my statements are my little bit of knowledge coupled with intuition.

I so not see how this design could possibly prolong a life, but maybe it would. My stronger intuition would then say would the longer life be one of quality that would make those added years worthy of experiencing.

The warning signs for me:

  • Designed to keep us in a perpetual state of dis-ease as nothing remains constant. I am not sure what the toll of this would be long term on ones ability to focus, nor the role it would play on ones immune system.

  • I believe we harm ourselves by not being in contact with the earth. It has a natural frequency (Schumann resonance) and the more out of synch with it we are I believe increases our illness/dysfunction. Purely speculation on my part here, but I have always felt an aversion to living other than on a first floor and I attribute this to my body telling me that it is unhealthy to do so. I am sensitive to things that many on the surface appear not to be, and I trust what I am being told.

  • You mentioned your apprehension as to their being no windows or plant life in the design. I have grown weary of the ways the "experts" push to separate us from nature and surround us with artificial conditions that cut us off from the source. I believe one of the causes of the rampant dis-ease and illness is this cutting off while surrounding ourselves with unnatural frequencies that disrupt our connection. This design seems to exploit this disconnect from what I see.

Thanks for putting this forward as a question the way you do. It is humbling to find one of your intelligence that is not arrogant. There is a new member to the community I told she should look you up. I think the two of you will have much in common and would be a great compliment to one another in your visions.

Here is a link to one of her more powerful posts if you find time in you busy schedule. I read this and to me this is the kind of living that would prolong ones life. I know, its not on architecture, just wanting you to see why I think the two of you could hit it off and complement one another.

There are lots to think about with this design. Some things I like, but others, like you suggest, make me wonder if this is just another extreme that only solves one, little problem without looking at the whole picture.

My stronger intuition would then say would the longer life be one of quality that would make those added years worthy of experiencing.

I think with this design they are trying to say that you will be more alert because you do not get habituated. The multiple levels means that you will also be using more muscles on a regular basis. In this case, I kind of agree. I see that there are many people that barely move around in a house because everything is at arm's distance. This is not good long term. I try to put everything far way, going back and forth to walk as much as I can even on the days when I work from home all day.

I am not sure what the toll of this would be long term on ones ability to focus, nor the role it would play on ones immune system.

This is a good point. I think the immune system would benefit, but I did not think about focus. One could argue that you should focus on walking, so it would exercise and improve this function, but I am not sure. I know that I have been guilty way too many times of walking without looking because I am on my phone, and this is something I definitely want to change.

I believe we harm ourselves by not being in contact with the earth.

Aho! This is something I agree with 100%. We need to take our shoes off more often and walk in contact with the Earth itself. That being said, I lived in a tree house village whose goal was to see how would you health and dreams change if you lived up high. In this case, the combination of being in a forest and being up high had a considerable, positive effect on our health. I think living high up could be good, but only if it is balanced with ample time barefoot on the ground. In my ideal, office buildings would have indoor grass patches where you could kick off your shoes and have a meeting or lunch while at work.

I have grown weary of the ways the "experts" push to separate us from nature and surround us with artificial conditions that cut us off from the source.

Absolutely! Now that I am more involved with the building side of things, I can understand why this happened, but now we have the technology to change it. New techniques in building materials, the growing biomimicry movement, an understanding of plant intelligence... these are all the different ingredients are leading to biophilic cities and buildings that meet the Living Building Challenge. The old design is rapidly becoming obsolete, and we need to fill that in with a new type of design that unites humanity and nature. The term "garden city" was coined by Ebenezer Hower in 1898 and in the 1970s, E. O. Wilson showed us that biophilia is our natural state. I am reading the book "Birthright" by Stephen Kellert where he beautifully describes cities enveloped by the natural world, and with architects like Michael Pawlyn and Vincent Callebaut and the innumerable urban planners, designers, engineers, artists that are actively working on this problem, I see a brighter future coming soon!

Thank you for your feedback, your passion, and your sharing. And many thanks to the link to @permieemmy--she and I have been exchanging on another thread. Great work, and I look forward to reading more. It is a busy time and I don't always get the time to read everything I want, but I do my best!
