Log Horizon Changed My Mind About Isekai Anime... Almost (Review)
Isekai anime have gained increased popularity and notoriety over the past few years with titles like Rising of the Shield Hero, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime and notoriously Sword Art Online but there's one Isekai Anime that stands out as a classic amongst fans of the genre, namely the two season trapped-in-a-game themed Log Horizon. Log Horizon follows Shiroe, his companions Akatsuki, Naotsugu, Nyanta, his gamers guild Log Horizon and the rest of the gamers in the city of Akhibara after thousands of players are mysteriously transported into the mmorpg Elder Tale after the release of its twelfth expansion pack forcing everyone to adapt to their favorite video game becoming reality in order to survive until they can return to reality. In this review we'll discuss the series' accessibility for non gamers, its great female characters, its annoying love square as well as how for someone who isnt a fan of Isekai, it may still be an enjoyable watch.
I watched this show and damn it certainly gave me some perspective about better story telling with the isekai genre. Log Horizon had some potential for better world building and it presented some rational expectations on how real gamers would react when in that particular situation. It had it's darker points sold short though, those knights that kept trying to get themselves killed in an attempt to get back to the real world. The show didn't explored so little about the consequences of their immortality and how it affected their mental health.
yeaaaaaaa they coulda had a whole arc dedicated to exploring how they fully got to that point and maybe even attempts at recovery but they were clearly pressed for time lmao
