How a Komodo Dragon kills

in #animals6 years ago (edited)

Have you ever wondered how the ferocious looking Komodo Dragon kills its prey? Previously it was thought that a highly septic bacteria found in the mouth of Komodo Dragon helps it in bringing down its prey. However, scientific study has dismissed this myth [1]. According to that study, like many other reptiles, a Komodo Dragon kills its victim by injecting venom.

Unlike venomous snakes who feed on little animals which they can swallow whole, a Komodo dragon feeds on large animals, such as Deer and Water Buffalo. Its modus operandi therefore is to bite its victim, so as to inject venom into its body, and then wait for it to weaken so much, that it is no more able to move. Once the victim is unable to move, the Komodo Dragon starts eating it alive, as we can see from the following video.

Now how does the Komodo Dragon's venom paralyze and kill its victim? Well, that is explained in the following video.

As we can see from the video, the normal blood clots just fine, but the blood which is mixed with the Komodo Dragon's venom, is unable to clot. This means that when a Komodo Dragon bites its victim, its victim can't stop bleeding, weakening it so much that it can't even move anymore! Scary, isn't it?
