Lunch Time for the Peregrine Falcon!

Not too long ago I got the honor of attending a show put on by a local bird rescue!

In their ranks was the majestic Peregrine Falcon. Peregrines are noted for their interesting shape (huge, gorgeous wingspan) and their affinity for catching their prey using spectacular dives.

They are kind of the acrobats of the bird world. If acrobats were made of feathers, claws, and death.

They primarily feed on smaller, slower birds like pigeons and ducks. They are known to roost extremely high so they can have the visual advantage for picking out all of the slow, lumbering noms!

Though they are opportunistic predators (in the sense that they definitely go for ones easier to catch) their ariel skills and speed would allow them to catch... well, pretty much anything they fancy.

Maybe slow birds are tastier?

Anyway, here are some pictures I got lucky enough to capture while I had front row seats for snack time!

And if seeing one animal eating another isn't your thing, I truly apologize! They've got to eat! And it is absolutely fascinating to watch! (Even if it is a bit gruesome)

As an apology for those that didn't enjoy it, please have a picture of "Chicken Pattie". She belongs to an adorable 6-year-old girl and was never eaten, only loved!

Please make sure to admire her one fuzzy foot, for it is freakin' cute.

Slower birds require less energy to catch, so peregrines don't have to eat as often (as all those acrobatics burn a lot of calories). As a child I was obsessed with falcons and even stitched a pillow with the image of one in 5th grade.

Wonderful serie!

Cheers!!!!

Slow birds are fatter and easier to catch, so excellent payoff for minimal effort :D

I love peregrines, one of my favourite raptors (if not the favourite), I think I based pretty much my entire Avian subspecies on them at the outset (I have these ideas that maybe I'll change up some characters' wing shapes down the line but I probably won't unless someone specifically asks me to for their character XD).

@andysantics48 and I just saw a raptor flight show in Brisbane, Australia, so hopefully we'll get some photos up soon as well. Your pics are some lovely close ups!

Beautiful animal.
And never apologize for showing nature. Of course a bird of pray eats meat in the raw. What's it supposed to do cook it on the grill?

She's more genuine that that suburban clueless mom who buys boneless skinless breasts because bones and skin remind her that its actually a dead animal she's feeding to her family and it grosses her out. I actually know someone like that.
