1984 is a reminder today of what could happen when power and greed go unchecked by the silent- true majority

Powerful words are meant to be shared with friends. Here is a favorite passage of mine, and what it means for us all today. from the dystopian sci-fi 1984 By George Orwell.

How could you tell how much of it was lies? It might be true that the average human being was better off now than he had been before the Revolution. The only evidence to the contrary was the mute protest in your own bones, the instinctive feeling that the conditions you lived in were intolerable and that at some other time they must have been different.

First, I personally believe that life in itself is a blessing. But this notion as we grow up that we are so much more better off than generations previous is a lie.

As kids grow up they are being pummeled by older generations on how much better off they were and how lucky it must be to be them. Oh really? 4 generations into this dystopian future of our own and suicide rate is at its highest likely ever in human history.

It is insane to think that just because society has to do less, or has more creature comforts that these things bring a healthy soul.

That is what Orwell is pointing to in this passage, and it is very difficult for us to comprehend. Thats our greed hiding the truth. That notion that since we have more bits and bops we must be better off.

Winston, the character that we follow in 1984 is from the class that we all most find ourselves in today. Which is, high enough above those below us to keep up complacent with an inner feeling of superiority. While the 1% of society holds the true wealth as means to further divide humanity.

But even though Winston's neighbors were "good" citizens, and part of the "middle class" Winston knew and felt deep down that his soul was in despair because we are all mirrors and what he saw in the faces of his neighbors was impossible to for him to unsee.

But there is hope inside of us all. We are born free of this smudg on our concious. We can choose to buy what those who think they own the world are selling through the media, pop-culture, and radio. Or we can shed the baggage and connect with our communities and talk about hope- not fear.
