Idolatry could become dangerous, as it leads people to crave the effect, feelings and emotions related to the words or image presented rather than the substance and intellectual value. It could also lead to useless disagreements between different groups of idol-followers, which could potentially escalate to violence. We are at an age where we might notice a noticeable drop in the number of people idolizing figures and idealizing ideas. I can ask what would fill in that gap in human thought. Hard to predict, technology might play a big role though.
