What is being human? / Wat is de mens?

This is my first posting. Hopefully you will enjoy this translation of the Dutch historical political-philosophical book [1] which underlies the first Dutch constitution. I'm very curious to read your thoughts about this quote in relation to our current free-thinking society.
It is not possible to answer a more important question for all mankind than: “In what way people can be deemed equal and which rights and obligations does this entail? ”. There is no question that is of more essential and more useful importance and that will have more consequences for all the populations on this earth.
Het is niet mogelijk een belangrijkere vraag voor de gehele mensheid te beantwoorden dan: “In welk opzicht kunnen de mensen geacht worden gelijk te zijn en welke rechten en plichten brengt dit met zich mee? ”. Er is geen vraag die van wezenlijker en nuttiger belang is en die meer gevolgen zal hebben voor alle volkeren op deze aarde.

Great translation, I am wondering. The thrive to be 'worth' more then your fellow men, might be a result of a natural mechanism which results in a human made hiarchy. If that's the case is this really the most important question for humanity or would it indicate an emerging property of how nature works?
The assumption underlaying your question interests me! Does the thrive to be worth more than your fellow men, exist 'in real' or is it an illusion made up by our self made economic system? As a result, are we talking about a human made hierarchy or about an artificially made hierarchy?
