Norsmen Vikings

Q: why did the Vikings begin raiding Europe and why did they stop? In this essay is about Viking. I am going to analyze about why did they started raiding Europe and why did they stop raiding Europe. Viking started raid in 793 C.E and stopped raid in 1066 C.E. The settle around Scandinavia. They discovered America before Christopher Columbus found it. Furthermore, during their period, they did many things that was very interesting especially their raiding. Viking is the word from Scandinavian which means a pirate. Viking are also called Norseman or Northman and they originally came from around Scandinavia which are Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and North Atlantic. Their age was between 700 CE. to 1100 C.E. or around 8 late 11th centuries. The society of Viking is hierarchic, the king is on the the top, below him is chieftains then farmer and the bottom is slaves. The slaves always get from war prisoner and when they raid or attacked others. Before 793 C.E., Viking was not connected to another country, but since 793 C. E. they started to raid and trade with Europe. The first raid of Viking was raid British Isles, they started raiding because they wanted to find some new food, new stuffs, new land and new resources. They travelled to Europe by Viking ship which has unique design and in the past Viking ship was the greatest technical ship. Furthermore, Scandinavia area is cold all the year, and they can not do the agriculture well. Not only the weather around the Scandinavia but also they beware King Charlemagne who was Christian King will spread their religion to them. They had opinion that Charlemagne will change their religion which was believed in their own god such as Odin, king of the god and changed their culture to Christian, so they started to raid Europe. Viking began raid to Europe by attacked only the coastlines as a result of as I already mentioned that they notice about Charlemagne. After Viking raid British Isles they also conquered Ireland and Scotland and they established Ireland, called Dublin. They destroyed the monastery of Europe which is the place for religion and monks were killed or enslaved. In 1066 C. E, the Viking stopped raiding because of the religion of Viking was absorbed into Christian, then their religion was disappeared at the end and when Europe changed the government system to feudal system. this was made Viking age end. There is another reason that make Viking ended or stopped raiding that was the Norwegian king was killed in the battle of Stamford Bridge. The battle of Stamford Bridge was between English army and the Norwegian forces (Viking).
