Kareri Lake, Kangra Overview

A beautiful, picturesque lake, Kareri seems like a place which has been picked out of a Hollywood movie. Also known as Kumarwah Lake, it is a shallow, fresh water lake south of the Dhauladhar range. Since the source is fresh melting snow and the lake is shallow, water visibility is very high and in most places, the lake bed can be seen.

While the Dhauladhar Range adds to the mesmeric appeal of this lake, the fact that it remains frozen during early December to March/April, serves as the main attraction of this trek. The Kareri Lake trekking originates from the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh and takes the participants through lush forests, narrow terrains, whirly passes, scenic meadows and much more. While on this trek, the trekkers can also participate in local tours and adventure activities like Tyrolean Traversing.

How to Reach Kareri Lake

You can take a jeep from Dharamshala to Ghera village, which is around 20 km away. From the main bazaar, proceed towards the bridge, crossing over Bhote Khosi. After crossing the bridge, take a left and trek upwards, straight along the Kareri stream. The trail diverges here. Stick to the one that goes along the river. Around 30 minutes into the hike, the forested trail will lead you to a government school. This is Sari Village. The trek from here is another 2 kilometre-long ascent to Kareri Village
