Have you notice that in every buildings you will see a breath taking lifting equipment operating at a height and it does not even tilt as it grow taller as the building grows taller. Well guys it is called as TOWER CRANES. Since I was a student I am still amazed the realization of science and how it contributes the success of engineering world.

These are common fixtures that are being used in vertical constructions. These things could definitely rise hundreds of feet or even more depends on the height of the constructed structures. These equipment can lift up in proportion to its load requirement which is the safest load as computed. The strength of the material being used with this really matters and definitely a requirement to support its given load. The Tower Crane are used to lift steel, concrete, large tools and equipment that are used at a height and other necessary materials.

When you look at it you could not imagine, how it is built? what science behind this nearly impossible things?

First of all, I will let you know the basic part of the tower crane.

1. BASE - just like our body, our feet is very important in order for us to stand and and keep our vertical posture as our spine is being supported. The steel structure of a crane is supported with a concrete pad.
   

   

2. MAST OF A CRANE - The base is connected to the mast or the tower, which gives the height to the crane. This mast or the tower has guard rails and guide rails which guides the elevator. This elevator facilitates the operator and the maintenance technician to reach the operator’s cab and the machinery arm from the base.
   

   

3. SLEWING UNIT - This is the mobile unit of the tower crane, which is capable of rotating almost 360 degrees. The rotation of the crane around its own axis is called slewing. It is a set of combination of huge gears and motors which enables the crane to slew.
   

   

4. HORIZONTAL JIB - it is called as the working arm of crane. We know that the jib is one of the most important parts of a crane and in a tower crane it extends horizontally carrying a trolley which runs in and out of the crane’s center carrying the load.
   

   
   

5. OPERATOR'S CABIN - The operator’s cabin is comfortably located in such a way that none of the crane operation would hinder his visibility. The cabin is provided with almost all facilities which are required and sometimes even comforts are provided.

OHH!! IM SCARED OF HEIGHT I DON'T WANT TO GET IN HERE.

HAVE YOU IMAGINED BURJ KHALIFA AS ONE OF THE TALLEST BUIDINGS IN THE WORD? IT HAS DEFINITELY A HEIGHT OF 829.8-metre-tall or (2,722 ft).
Well exactly the same as the tower crane is being built into this height.

HOW DOES THIS TOWER CRANE EXTEND ITS HEIGHT?

Basically, the crane has its hydraulic ram. Extending cranes height can also be called climbing. The climbing of tower cranes is a specialised technique used in the installation of tower
cranes to increase or decrease the height of a crane without the use of a large mobile
crane to lift components to the top of the crane. Successful tower crane climbing operations
depend on detailed planning and effective teamwork by suitably trained and experienced
personnel.

It has two types of crane climbing: External and Internal Climbing.

External Climbing: where the tower of a crane outside a building is extended with a jacking system to allow additional tower mast to be inserted.

Internal Climbing: where the crane tower is supported by the building floors and is jacked up and mast is inserted as the building rises.
