New Atari Hardware Inbound

in #games8 years ago

Fans of Atari have plenty of things to get excited about. There are at least five Atari themed pieces of hardware on the way this year. While there is not a lot of information available there are a few tidbits out there (we collected them all right here for you).

First, AtGames hardware. This comes from someone that is known to work with AtGames, Bill Loguidice of Armchair Arcade.

Bill had this to say on Facebook early on June 10th, 2017:

So it looks like Atari fans can expect to see at least four Atari licensed pieces of hardware from AtGames.

  1. Atari Flashback SD version
  2. Atari Flashback HD version
  3. Atari Flashback Gold Activision Edition (HD and includes “additional” Activision games)
  4. Atari Flashback Portable

Let’s look at those one at a time. The SD and HD versions of the Atari Flashback are probably not going to offer anything unique to one over the other (besides how they connect to your television). That is fine, though a little bewildering considering the proliferation of HD television sets. I guess there is still a sizeable market for standard definition televisions.

The Atari Flashback Gold Activision Edition intrigues me. What could “additional” Activision games mean, I am figuring by now the whole catalog of Atari 2600 Activision games has probably been released on one of these. Maybe it is games that never appeared on a Flashback yet (but maybe somewhere else)? This one is the interesting one of the bunch so far.

Next, we have the Atari Flashback Portable. This is obviously a portable Atari. I wonder if there will be a TV out option on this unit?

Finally, we have the mention of the AtariBox. Bill says it is in no way connected to vintage or legacy hardware but contains modern hardware. That could mean a lot of things. This could be a computer of some sort (emulation box?) that has the Atari licensed logo on it (and presumably in the operating system).

We will have to wait and see how this develops.

Great post! That would be amazing if the Atari Flashback Portable had casting capability or hdmi and this would be cool to see in action.

YES! If only Atgames would offer either. I doubt they will as these are more often than not, just cash runs for them. If they were more than that, there would be cartridge support for instance.
