The Daily Meditation #10 ~ TGA

Today I would like to look at the Dhammapada (Scriptures) Verse #10:

The story behind the verse #10 is "The Story of Devadatta" (I know those names are not much familiar to western culture).

According to the story: Once the two Chief Disciples of Lord Buddha, the Venerable Sariputta and the Venerable Maha Moggallana, went from Savatthi to Rajagaha (Two Cities of Ancient India). There, the people of Rajagaha invited them, with their one thousand followers, to a morning meal. On that occasion a rich person handed over a piece of cloth, worth one hundred thousand gold coins, to the organizers of the alms-giving ceremony. Since the two Chief Disciples visited Rajagaha only occasionally, the cloth was offered to Devadatta, who was a permanent resident of Rajagaha.
Devadatta promptly made the cloth into robes and moved about pompously, wearing them. Then, a certain monks from Rajagaha came to Savatthi to pay homage to the Buddha, and told him about Devadatta and the robe, made out of cloth worth one hundred thousand gold coins. The Buddha then said that it was not the first time that Devadatta was wearing robes that he did not deserve.

In here the Lord Buddha said "The yellow robe" is worthy for monks who discarded all moral defilement (kilesas) and who is established in moral precepts.

This story also mean that, a designation or a job title is not worthy if it goes to a wrong person's hand. It's worthy if right person took that position.
