BRUSSELS was today overflowing with confidence as Europe prepares itself for an impending trade war with the US, with senior eurocrats telling Donald Trump: “We’re going to win.”

Top EU officials expect that a stand-off with America over steel and aluminium imports will grow into a full blown commercial conflict, but feel they are in a strong position to beat the billionaire president. Europe has convinced itself that it is the new global champion of free trade and that it needs to take Mr Trump down a peg or two over his contentious “America first” policies. And in an extraordinary admission one former high-flying eurocrat even revealed that EU officials “had quite some fun” the last time they had to confront the US over steel imports, back in 2002.

His remarks sum up the mood in Brussels, which is one of growing confidence and bravado after the bloc salvaged two key trade deals with America’s neighbour Canada and Japan. But whilst the EU successfully defeated George W Bush in its last commercial stand-off, back in 2002, it is facing a significantly less predictable opponent in the form of successful businessman Mr Trump. Eurocrats have been increasingly unnerved and enraged by the tycoon’s policy on international trade, which has recently included slapping sanctions on Russian energy companies that imperil projects within Europe.
