A Melbourne fitness instructor who invested $2000 in an online currency four years ago was "dumbfounded" when he logged to find it was worth more than $1 million.

Jordan Travers, from North Fitzroy, bought $2000 worth of Ethereum in 2013 before he set off on a backpacking trip around South America, the Herald Sun reported.

The 21-year-old investor was prompted to check his account four years later after seeing the online currency's value had sky-rocketed.

Ethereum was valued at $US50, which made his 5190 units worth $260,000.

"I just sat there looking at the screen, I was literally dumbfounded. And I mean literally," he told to the herald Sun.

"I called my parents. My mum was jumping up and down screaming with excitement! And Dad … didn’t believe it."

He cashed out a portion of his earnings on his father's recommendation only to watch the value of the online currency balloon sixfold.

Had he left the full amount, his $2000 investment would have been worth $2.5 million.

Mr Travers has now withdrawn a total of $719,000, but has left $340,000 units on Ethereum.

The 21-year-old is planning to travel with his earnings.

The fitness instructor said he will also invest in further shares, but intends on steering clear of Ethereum and Bitcoin as it would be hard to replicate his success.
