A determined literary and political activist, Begum Rokeya was the pioneer of women education in the Indian subcontinent. She defied all the hindrances of a society dominated by patriarchal rule that barred women to pursue their dreams of lives.

She wrote a huge number of writings. They include poems, short stories, essays, novels as well as satirical writings. From 1903, she started writing in the Nabanoor under the name of Mrs R S Hossain. She wrote regularly for different literary magazines and journals, such as Bangiya Mussalman Sahitya, Mahila, Saogat, Mahammadi, Nabaprabha, Bharatmahila, Al-Eslam, Nawroz, Mahe-Nao, Patrika, The Mussalman and Indian Ladies Magazine. An educationist, social activist and advocate of women's rights, she wrote for the emancipation of women from the shackles of patriarchy and invited women to break the social barriers that discriminated against them.
Her novella, Sultana's Dream, was quite influential and it took the literary world by storm when it was published. It was an attempt to reverse the role of men and women in a male dominated society. A splendid satire, it is regarded as magnum opus of Begum Rokeya.

It drew attention of the critics and was able to garner a decent amount of influence upon its publication. Her husband, Sakhawat Hussain died in 1909, and it was an irreparable loss in her life. He had encouraged his wife to amass money for establishing a school primarily for Muslim women and inspired her in many other ways.

Five months after his death, Rokeya established a high school in the memory of her beloved husband. The name of the school was Sakhawat Memorial Girls' High School. It started in Bhagalpur, a traditionally Urdu-speaking area, with only five students. A dispute with her husband's family over property forced her to move the school in 1911 to Calcutta, a Bengali-speaking area. It remains one of the city's most popular schools for girls and is currently run by the state government of West Bengal.

Begum Rokeya's tolerance and broadmindedness can still guide women who want to pursue their dreams against all sorts of intolerance and religious bigotry. Till her last day, she remained busy with her school, and writings. She died of heart problems on December 9, 1932, at the age of 52. December 9 is celebrated in Bangladesh as Rokeya Day.
Still we feel proud too much for her.
