for art buyers part 4

The art infused T2, Mumbai International Airport is one of the country’s largest repository of Indian art displayed in public domain. It has close to 7,000 art pieces by more than 1,500 artists representing eras, regions and different mediums. For those who know the Reddys, the theme for the airport, even before it was opened, was a forgone conclusion.
GV Sanjay Reddy, scion of GVK Industries, is an avid art patron and collector. Sanjay and Pinky’s sprawling art filled home in Hyderabad is built around their massive art collection. While Sanjay has been collecting art since he was 20 (taking guidance from art historian Jagdish Mittal), Pinky is a relatively new entrant. She credits her erudite husband for initiating her into the art world. Sanjay feels his wife has developed an astute understanding over the years. He always runs his selection by her. “She’s got an intuition which helps me decide,” he shares.
Pinky’s first art acquisition, less than two decades ago, was a painting of lord Ganesh by MF Husain. The next was a sculpture of the same deity by G Vithal. “But my process of buying art evolved as I was building my (current) home and later, while I was putting together the art collection for the airport with Rajiv Sethi (the art aficionado and curator for the Mumbai International Airport),” she reveals.
