Ceres Environmental Park: Entrance Mosaic

in #artzone7 years ago (edited)

There's a difference between a functional landscape, and one of beauty. Some places are both. Ceres Environmental Park in Melbourne is a not-for-profit community sustainability centre in East Brunswick that runs environmental programs, urban agriculture projects, green tech demonstrations and other social enterprises. There's a grocery, cafe, community kitchen, permaculture and bushfood nursery and an online organic supermarket. It's situated on 4.5 hectares on the Merri Creek.

I love the art dotted all around Ceres, starting with a fantastic entrance way. I'll write more about Ceres when I get a chance, but for now I thought you'd enjoy the mosaics!

CERES (pronounced ‘series’) is a place where people come together to share ideas about living well together, and directly participate in meeting their social and material needs in a sustainable way. Through social enterprises, education and training, employment and community engagement, CERES provides the means by which people can build awareness of current local and global issues, and join in the movement for economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Their promotional video gives us the 'vibe' of the place, but it really is worthy a visit or a day out, even as a tourist to Melbourne - a must if you're into sustainable practices.

The Wurundjeri people originally lived on the land here. The Merri Creek was the central river for their life. After the Europeans invaded and Melbourne grew, the site was a bluestone quarry and then a landfill site. It became quite polluted and the wildlife disapppeared. The Merri isn't like that anymore - it's a testament to Melbournians who have revived it and cared for it, and Ceres has been instrumental in that movement.

From the Ceres website:

Since CERES was established in 1982, the efforts of many groups, staff, volunteers and labour market programs have transformed the site. Once a desolate wasteland, today CERES is a place of nature and beauty, inhabited by a vibrant and diverse community. We attract around 400,000 visits each year through our on-site education and training programs, Nursery, Organic Market & Grocery and the Merri Table. CERES continues to provide opportunities for the community to come together in site groups or as volunteers, through community programs, venue hire and events.

We reach out to over 200,000 people through our work in schools across metropolitan Melbourne, and regional and rural Victoria. We have a growing following on social media, which further widens our audience and reach. CERES Fair Food delivers organic food and the sustainable food message across metropolitan Melbourne. CERES also partners with a wide variety of organisations to bring about mutually beneficial outcomes, and reaches across the planet with CERES Global taking groups to India, Indonesia, Cuba and Aboriginal communities.

I'll definitely post more about Ceres next time I'm up there to take some photos.

Do you have an environmental centre like in your area? How inspiring is their vision! I love the way they bring the community together for creativity and education.

I lurve Ceres. Since I moved to Belgrave I haven't been there for quite a few years. But it's a brilliant place, soulful and stimulating. And aren't the mosaics just lovely.

Agreed. We must make another trip soon. Belgrave is nice!!!

Belgrave is pretty lovely. We are thinking of moving if we can swing it even further out. I'd like a low maintenance bush block with a house surrounded by trees. Sure will miss the hills though if we leave here. It's the first place I've lived in where winter is actually sexy :)

He he .. in what way??? Warm fires and red wine and rugs? He he... a bush block sounds good. We have 5 acres in Winchelsea which is nice but it's prettier your way!

The fog and the rain backdrop waaaaaaaaay better on leaves and trunks :) We can see it rolling in here. When it's your neigjbours' houses - well, that's just depressing :)

5 acres at Winchelsea sounds pretty good to me!

It is quite lovely!!!

Wow, I just can't imagine the amount of work and creativity to create those mosaics, so beautiful.

I feel curious now that you posted about CERES and the idea of a sustainable environmental centre, I'm not sure if we have something like that here and I'll for sure search.

I would love to know!! Ceres is fabulous. They turned wasteland into a thriving hub of sustainability.

Well that was really inspiring! It makes me wonder if we should go into a similar direction with our project. We already want to have a kind of educational thing going in terms of living more in tune with our earth and teaching people about Narural Building and composting toilets...

Beautiful mosaics, thanks again for sharing

That would be amazing. Have a look at the Ceres website. It really is amazing. They have all sorts of things going on!! Next time I go up I will take heaps of photos for you.

I thank you so much. Yeah I'll look into the website for sure and I'll look out for your photos!
