Add BAT "Basic Attention Token" functionality to steemit?

Could a similar functionality to BAT (Basic Attention Token) be added to steemit that would allow user/viewer interest to be gauged and awarded to content producers AUTOmagically rather than requiring the viewer/user to click on upvote/flag to indicate their (dis)interest?

BAT is a utility token for a new, blockchain-based digital advertising and services platform.
