Stellaris announces the Apocalypse Expansion

in #stellaris7 years ago (edited)

Today we received a dev diary outlining plans to release a new expansion for Stellaris called the Apocalypse Expansion which appears to be focused around Planet Destroyers a new class of ship called Colossus.

The Colossus appear to be something like a deathstar though perhaps without the armor and turrets, just a big laser really.

Another announcement is that we will also have player buildable Titans.

Titans are limited flag ships that players can control.

"Titans are intended to be the flagships of your fleets, and as such are limited in number: You can always field at least one Titan, plus an additional amount dependent on your overall naval capacity."

They also spoke of Ion Cannons.
Ion Cannons are stations that can be built as part of the defense platform fleet of a Starbase. Each Ion Cannon is essentially a single massive gun emplacement that mounts a single Titanic weapon, allowing the Starbase to engage enemy fleets at massive ranges and greatly improving the Starbase's ability to deal with enemy Battleships and Titans.

Hopefully they've got more expansion features locked away yet that they'll announce in future diaries but it looks quite interesting. It does pose a problem for my very strong, resilient psychic warrior cult militarist battlethrall turtles.
Under 2.0 I was hoping they'd be able to lock down worlds and stop any enemy forces from invading for as long as i needed to buy time. These colossus may become very useful for races like mine that refuse to surrender their worlds in the face of greater fleets.

It seems @fiskey has already worked this out as well :(
Your Turtles: 'Ha fool you'll never break the will of our psychic commandos',
Meanwhile on my planet destroyer 'You may fire when ready'.

Sort:

If you've been following the dev diaries along the way, there are a ton of changes in bound for Stellaris – and I am a little hesitant about a couple of them, but overall very excited to see them coming down the pipe.

Needless to say, I had my preorderer out for Apocalypse about as fast as the email could hit my inbox. And I do not regret that in the slightest.

I suspect that we are going to see the Paradox is pursuing development of Stellaris in much the same way that they have been pushing EU4 forward, with a series of very focused mechanical expansions which add on cosmetics and a few extra bits, and the rest being pushed into free updates to the core. I'm really okay with that.

Though at this point I might want to see a new version of EU4 rolled out that straight up integrates all of the mechanical expansions into a single package with a reasonable price, just to act as a baseline for new users and new players to come into the franchise. As it stands, it's a little pricey.

I would prefer for Stellaris to avoid that particular fate, if I could – but at the moment I am quite happy with what they have coming out.

yeah i love the dlc expansions it drives them to really improve the games and they're so much better then when first released however they do make it hard to catch up it can be insanely pricey if you fall behind a few dlc. Which is where im inclined to think they should start bundling them or saying okay anything older then 2 years is now core content like mmos do after too many expansions.

We shall see.

Paradox has been really active in a lot of the latest deep cut sales, pricing their older expansions for core franchises quite reasonably. I don't see any reason for them to stop that policy, so waiting until another seasonal sale to get into, say, Crusader Kings 2, is going to be the new norm. At least I hope so.

Resteemed your article. This article was resteemed because you are part of the New Steemians project. You can learn more about it here: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@gaman/new-steemians-project-launch

Thanks for posting this mate, I had no idea they're releasing an expansion but I love the game so thanks.

was just announced a few hours ago but patch 2.0 should come out before this expansion as we're 1.9 now and its a complete rebuild of sorts it will change so many things from frontier posts, to war goals, to ground combat and space combat should be amazing.

Actually, my suspicion is that Apocalypse and the 2.0 patch are going to be simultaneous. There are enough things going on that doing so makes sense, given the way they market their other platforms.

i'd welcome that as 2.0 cant be too far away

It's got to be close at this point; they've been teasing us so long that putting out an expansion notification has got to be a sign. Which, historically, means that we are looking at somewhere within a two month time horizon. Hopefully much sooner, but but potentially out that far.

May as well wave goodbye to about a week of my life as soon as they drop it!

That's pretty much what I've expected, and what I expect from all of the DLC going forward anyway, so this place is going to be awful quiet around that time!
