It’s widely known that things are different in other countries, but did you know just how different things really were? These are 21 Crazy Things That Are Only Possible In Japan.

#10 - You’d Be Willing To Trade A Car For A Bike
Seriously. Even though in the United States having a car seems like a right of passage, there is virtually no room for everyone one of the over hundred MILLION people who live there to own a car and have a place to park it. Since that’s the case, and everyone has to get around somehow, you are often met with sights like the one pictured here next to popular public places like malls. Everyone would rather own a bike than a huge car.

#9 - You Could Spend A Few Hundred On Fruit
Well, one piece of fruit, a melon. A musk melon, as you can see here, looks a heck of a lot like a cantaloupe, except for the price tag it comes with. Although the melon in this picture is just a piece of fruit, it could cost you around $300. Is it worth it?

#8 - You Could Live In Fear
The group of gas masked people in this picture look like they are ready for a nuclear fallout but they actually wear these masks all year round and they have for years. On an island that sits southeast of a place called Honshu, Miyake-Jima is an active volcano called Mount Oyama. Although the volcano’s last eruption was over a decade ago in 2005, the mountain has since been spewing out poisonous gas, forcing the residents pictured here to wear masks every where they go. To top off the scare factor, frequent raid alarms go off in any case where there is a sharp increase in the sulfur levels in the air.

#7 - You Clean Your Own School
You won’t find a janitor in any of the schools scattered around Japan. In the Japanese culture, they hold education, learning, and humility to incredibly high standards. Instead of employing an old man janitor to clean up after the kids, there is time set aside in each day for the class to come together to clean up the room. Like you see in this picture, the students sweep, pick up clutter, and organize the room in preparation for the next day. They even mop the floors and clean the bathrooms.

#6 - Foods Are Made With Mayo
Although this sounds sort of stupid, since we make foods with mayo too, hello potato salad, we don’t use mayonnaise in the same ways as the Japanese. As a flavor that is only possible in Japan, mayo, like the Kewpie brand pictured here, is used to give flavors to foods like spaghetti sauce, pancakes, and even ice cream.

#5 - Your Crooked Teeth Will Be Admired
Just like we are obsessed with white teeth, we prefer for them to be straight too. This concept, just like the white teeth black teeth idea, is pretty much opposite in the tiny island country of Japan. One could easily assume that the girl in the left image and the lady in the right were two different people, sisters maybe, but different all the same. The two photos, however, show the exact same girl, just before and after her “yaeba” operation. This dentistry technique creates snaggle tooth fangs in an otherwise straight toothed mouth.

#4 - You Can Visit An Entire Island of Bunnies
If taking one bunny out at a time and cuddling them wasn’t doing the trick for you in the bunny cafes, you can always make a trip over to an entire island of bunnies. Okunoshima is the name of the island you want your captain to sail to, which is located in Japan’s Inland Sea. The reason they ended up there wasn’t too great but the actions after allowed the rabbits to thrive and soon became a protected tourist attraction. These furry friends have simply flourished in the predator free environment.

#3 - Everyone You Meet Is Going To Be Literate
Believe it or not but the literacy rate, meaning people who can read and write, is almost 100%. That’s something to be proud of since that’s a percentage that truly puts the rest of the world to shame. Since Japan is so devoted to learning and teaching others, they have obviously far exceeded the rest of us when it comes to education.

#2 - Your Hotel Room Is Less Than Luxurious
Even if you get a 10x12 room that has crap wallpaper in the States, you should count yourself lucky. If you were in Japan, you would be staying in one of the teeny tiny pods or “capsules” you see in this picture. No, that isn’t some place to store your stuff, that small space is your room. The capsule hotel was invented in 1979 and because the country has been super crowded ever since, the style stuck around.

#1 - You’ll See Bugs Worn In Hair
This might seem like a joke, but the bugs in these girls’ hair are supposedly worn as a fashion statement. We think it’s safe to say that that’s one statement we won’t be trying to get in on. Bugs are not OK in any sense and are certainly not cool hanging about in our precious locks. No thanks.
